"I just decided I would tell her every single day. And she forgets it every day, so it’s like new to her each time she hears it."

People get sick. And in the depths of that sickness, a person might forget about her first date, her wedding, and even the love of her life.

"As the population ages, the burden of social isolation on public health will only increase."

As National Depression Education and Awareness Month begins, it makes sense to consider loneliness as a public health challenge, but one for which we have some answers.

"The supply of caregivers is shrinking just as the nation needs them most. Every day, 10,000 people turn 65. In 2020, there will be 56 million people 65 and older, up from 40 million in 2010."

Family members have long been the backbone of the nation’s long-term care system. But smaller, more far-flung families mean fewer of these unpaid helpers to attend to the rising population of elderly Americans. “Are you really my daughter?”

Today marks the 17th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

We honor those who lost their lives along with the first responders who exemplified the true meaning of service, bravery, and selflessness on that day.

Sarcopenia- a decline in skeletal muscle with age can be considered for muscle what osteoporosis is to bone. "Up to 13 percent of people in their 60s and as many as half of those in their 80s have sarcopenia."

Sarcopenia, a decline in skeletal muscle in older people, contributes to loss of independence.

Do you know a senior in need of companion care? Companion care services offer emotional support and companionship for seniors who want to remain independent and enjoy life with extra guidance.

Our clients enjoy sharing fond stories of their past, spa visits for manicures and pedicures, chatting over a meal, taking walks, light housekeeping and much more. This type of care can be significant for seniors who live alone and may be isolated from others.

Companion care services can prolong seniors from going to assisted living or nursing facilities by enabling them to remain active, both physically and mentally. Family members enjoy peace of mind when their loved one is both physically and mentally active with a companion care employee in the community.

Studies show the effects of dementia are delayed when seniors remain active, engage in conversation and play games!

Researchers now contend that social isolation and loneliness may represent a greater public health hazard than obesity or a near pack-a-day smoking habit.

Research suggests social isolation and feeling lonely may rival obesity as a threat to people’s health.

With the vast majority of Americans living in urban settings, it's crucial -- for older Americans, for our nation's public health, and for the economics of healthcare -- that our cities be designed with an aging population in mind.

'Reflections of The Past' is an award-winning photo series by commercial advertising photographer Tom Hussey. The photographs show an elderly person looking pensively at the reflection of his/her younger self in the mirror. Hussey was inspired by a World War II veteran who said "I can't believe I'm going to be 80.

Does anyone from Seattle have any great tips for Pam and Rita Jernigan with their upcoming move?

Hi! My wife and I are planning to move to Seattle to be near our son. We like tennis (public not a fancy club), hiking, casual biking, walking to the grocery. We're 56 & 62. I wondered if any of you seniors could recommend some neighborhoods. We are middle income. We would love to be able to walk to a few restaurants. Our kiddo lives in Montlake, but it's a bit pricey for us. Any tips would be great! Thanks. Pam and Rita Jernigan in Little Rock, AR

We received this message and are turning to our Facebook community: if you have advice for our soon-to-be new neighbors, please share it here!
