From seamstress to trailblazer, Ida Gray Nelson made history in 1890 as the first black woman to earn a dental degree in the U.S. For more than three decades, she provided care, leadership, and representation that helped shape the future of dentistry in both Cincinnati, OH and Chicago, IL - where she opened private practices. She was a mentor and role model for many of her patients, including Olive M. Henderson, who became the second African-American dentist in Chicago. Her legacy reminds us of the power of perseverance and the lasting impact of compassionate care.

One year ago, we launched HDflex to help supported practices navigate one of dentistry’s biggest challenges: staffing flexibility. What used to mean canceled appointments or added stress now often means a shift posted and filled quickly, many times by a fellow Heartland Dental supported team member already familiar with the systems.

The result? Healthier work environments, stronger collaboration across practices, and uninterrupted care for patients. HDflex isn’t just meeting a need, it’s shaping the future of flexibility in dentistry. Read more about HDflex here: https://bit.ly/4bUNKwx

HDflex supported practices across the country overcome staffing disruptions, maintain continuity of care, and create new opportunities for team members.

Robert Tanner Freeman’s legacy reminds us that progress is built by those who refuse to give up. Despite being rejected by multiple dental schools because of his race, Freeman went on to graduate from Harvard Dental School in 1869 and become the first African American dentist in the US. He dedicated his career to expanding dental care and education for communities most in need. During , we pause to honor pioneers like Freeman and reflect on the stories that continue to shape our profession and our communities.
