My Story: Why I Became a Homeopath. Part 2 Discovering Homeopathy

Part one ended with me purchasing a homeopathic ‘poly pharmacy’ remedy for my ‘migraine headache’ or for what I thought was a migraine headache.

I took the tablet, and amazingly my headache dissapeared. Wow.

I went back to that shop and looked for more boxes - I particularily was interested in the box for Arthritis Pain as well as the one for Sinus Pain . That may help my family, I thought.

Daughter’s sinus headache dissapeared with her pill, my husband was not so lucky – no change. But 2 out of 3 people saw improvement and that was pretty good odds, so back to that store I went and found a box that said pain, so I bought that one and it worked. Not great but it did bring relief.

I was a fan. I started buying boxes of these homeopathic remedies – anyone that remotely complained of something, sent me to those boxes to see if they would help. [Definitely a practice I no longer use, I know better now].
I was already falling in love with this homeopathic stuff and people who tried it were mostly improving.

There was no internet in those days and no one I knew had a computer, so off to the library I went, I scoured the card catalogs (yup, that is what we had in those days) but alas, it yeilded nothing. I ended up borrowing a book from another library, it took months to get and gave me very little information.

Still on antibiotics for Lyme Disease, my symptoms (minus most of the headache pains) continued to get worse. It would be a year or so before I learned about ‘SUPPRESSION’ – suppression is the hiding of symptoms. Like putting a bandaid on symptoms, it does not cure symptoms it only makes us feel better. We suppress with aspirin or tylenol = the headache is still there we we may not be debilitated by symptoms, but it does not cure those symptoms. With suppression something underneath is getting worse without our knowing it. In my case, my memory was going, chronic fatigue set in, joint and muscle pain limited my movements. I was getting worse and worse, I was dying.

Three years on antibiotics, and when I tried to get off them, the headaches returned with a vengence and within hours, at this point nothing helped those headaches.

I saw a big sign in the next town that said “HOMEOPATH” , I did not even know people still practiced homeopathy. I was slowly dying, What did I have to lose? I called up, the homeopath and he took me as a patient tight away. That homeopath changed my whole life.

Indian researchers recently tested the efficacy of individualized homeopathic medicines in the treatment of atopic dermatitis (eczema) in adults in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial.

In this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 6 months duration (n = 60), adult patients were randomized to receive either individualized homeopathic medicines (n = 30) or identical-looking placebos (n = 30). The researchers found that individualized homeopathic medicines performed significantly better than placebos in reducing the severity of atopic dermatitis in adults. Inter-group differences for the secondary outcomes favored homeopathy, but were overall statistically non-significant.

My Story -

I had the privilege of a wonderful education - Botany, Zoology, Geology and the Arts from Harvard University - and yes, Harvard was fantastic. In 1973 I packed up and moved to my husband's family farm in what was remote NJ. Woodlands, nature, very little traffic and Utopia from a Cosmopolitan Massachusetts. I became an herbalist and a herb farmer, we grew herbs and cut flowers commercially.
In the 1990's I got recruited for local politics. Late nights, political pressures, etc, and I got sick! Really sick! Lyme disease started out insidiously. Migraine headaches that wrapped around my head and settled over my right eye. I was half blind. Ok, I was under stress - big deal. I proceeded to get worse, neurological headaches, memory impairment, chronic fatigue, and tons and tons of medicine, amoxicillin for 3 years and IV antibiotics and I was NOT getting any better, I was dying slowly.

My youngest daughter had a sleep over, the girls were at the laughing, giggling, shrieking age. Just what that headache needed. I packed the girls in to the car, and off to the local small shopping mall. When we got there, the girls went one way, I stumbled blindly the other way, by a health food store that had a huge display of homeopathic 'poly-pharmacy remedies'. Did I believe in homeopathy? Hell NO!,
I had the best of modern medicine and it was not touching my head pain, why on earth would I believe in 'airy nothings'?

But, I was desperate, at this point I would have tried anything. There was a box of homeopathic medicine with the label: Stress and Tension Headaches, the cost was $6.00 - what else did I have to lose? I bought the box and told the sales person if I worked, I'd be back.

As I slowly meandered out of the store, I popped a pill from it's aluminum container, put it in my mouth and continued walking, I passed a few stores and miracle of miracles the headache started lifting up, up and away. Wow, no one was as stunned or as surprised as I was. I was headache free.

ARNICA​​​​ ACONITE

What are all these strange names we are seeming on TV, on our phone, and even in our medicine?
What are they used for and can they help me?

For example, Arnica is found in almost every sports medical bag to help with sprains and bruises.
Arnica Cream is advertised on TV, when rubbed on the affected area, helps in healing a sprain, bruise and muscle aches.
Arnica is also the most used homeopathic remedy by the Olympic contenders. It is safe, non toxic and so little is used it is not considered to be a drug.

Aconite, or ‘wolfsbane’, is often found in medicine for Asthma or diarrhea. It’s a great remedy if you’re feeling chilled and cold from exposure to the cold weather.
Usually a dose of Aconite can warm you up and prevent illness from catching a chill.

The Future of Complementary and Alternative Medicine

We here at the BIH want to inform you of some major changes going on the US medical field. The US medicine market has been undergoing a drastic change the past few years, and the prognosis is more of the same. While the US is seeing physicians leaving the medical field, the opposite is true of the complementary and alternative field. According to CareATC in reference to Healthcare Industry News, there are major changes happening in healthcare at an unprecedented rate. There are 5 major reasons why this appears to be happening. This fast pace of adaption is leaving many physicians stressed and uncertain. The AMA reported a burnout rate of 38% in 2020. This increased significantly at the end of 2021 to 63%. (AMA, 2023) One factor in this increased rate is that the healthcare environment is becoming increasingly influenced by consolidation. It is reported that at 3 in 10 physicians and residents experience mergers or acquisitions within the past 5 years. However, it was reported that only 1/5 of these physicians were actively involved in the decision making. (The Physicians Foundation, 2023) Along with this, the added financial burdens and administrative pressures help fuel this burnout. With the predicted future of traditional medicine, ‘complementary’ and ‘alternative’ medicine, including Homeopathic Medicine, are becoming more and more accepted These approaches are safer and have less side effects, and are therefore the new first choice of treatments.
