Junction Center Yoga Studio in Door County

Junction Center Yoga Studio in Door County YOGA STUDIO CLASSES… all levels, the year 'round in Door County, walk-ins welcome!

are based on the Ashtanga (Eight-Limbed) Yoga Tradition which includes elements such as breath work and meditation as well as the physical, hatha yoga practice. We begin the process by working with the breath, focus, and proper alignment in the asanas (postures). Individual instruction and a hands-on approach allows each student to feel the form of each asana. As the process continues and students feel comfortable with the various asanas, we begin to work with the Vinyasa style of practice which simply means to flow from one asana to the next through a series of poses, thus increasing aerobic activity.

I’m not opposed to meditation. I’ve tried it in most of its modern forms: guided, silent, app-led, and instructor-guided. I’ve done it lying on the floor, sitting upright, accompanied by candles or incense, and even while wearing a red-light face mask.

BURNING THE OLD YEAR
BY NAOMI SHIHAB NYE
Letters swallow themselves in seconds.
Notes friends tied to the doorknob,
transparent scarlet paper,
sizzle like moth wings,
marry the air.

So much of any year is flammable,
lists of vegetables, partial poems.
Orange swirling flame of days,
so little is a stone.

Where there was something and suddenly isn’t,
an absence shouts, celebrates, leaves a space.
I begin again with the smallest numbers.

Quick dance, shuffle of losses and leaves,
only the things I didn’t do
crackle after the blazing dies.

Happy Solstice! Welcoming back the Light!
The Winter Solstice is today, December 21. It is the shortest day of the year and marks the beginning of winter. In ancient times, it was called Yule and lasted for 12 days. It was a time of celebration as they knew that, following this time, the days would begin to grow longer. The traditions of Yule are many, and many were incorporated into Christian traditions. Evergreens represent everlasting life and were hung around windows and doors. Mistletoe, holly, ivy, yew and pine were used, each with its own symbolism – mistletoe was the healer and protector, holly is another protector, believed to repel unwanted spirits, ivy is a symbol of immortality and resurrection, yew is symbolic of regeneration and rebirth as it sends up new trees from its roots, while pine brings healing and joy to the home. The Yule Tree, a pine, was brought into the home to so the wood spirits would have a place to keep warm in the cold winter and was decorated with food and treats for the spirits to eat. The giving and receiving of gifts has been part of Yule since ancient times, celebrating the birth of the sun.Enjoy the Winter Solstice and know that the sun has begun its climb towards the Summer Solstice!
