Founded in 2003, Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) is a free clinic in El Cajon serving those who cannot afford health insurance or medical care Thank you.
We operate by appointment only. Please call the clinic to schedule an appointment. This allows us to understand what your needs may be and pair you with a volunteer Healthcare Provider to meet those needs directly. Our volunteers work for us on an as needed basis and their schedules vary. Therefore, it is easiest for us to speak directly with you to ensure we find the best time and provider to assist you.

Thank you for standing with our patients and our mission. Your support strengthens the foundation of care that so many in our community rely on.
As we head toward the end of the year, Volunteers in Medicine continues to work hard alongside our community trying to ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they deserve.
VIM recently attended Taste of TLC at the East County Transitional Living Center, where the CEO Julie Hayden informed us about all their great work transforming the lives of individuals experiencing homelessness.
VIM also spent time in City Heights at Sanpa Barbershop offering blood pressure screenings for their clients. It was a great day of service, meaningful conversations, and building new community connections.
We’re grateful to partner with organizations and businesses that share our commitment to caring for our community. VIM continues to show up for our community in hopes of providing access for all!

This week, Executive Directors from free and charitable clinics across California are gathering at the CAFCC Conference to strengthen our collective impact.
On Nov. 6, we headed to the State Capitol to meet with State Senators, Assemblymembers, and their staff. Together, we lifted up the vital role free and charitable clinics play in keeping our communities healthy. We advocated for policies that protect and expand access to care for California’s most vulnerable residents.
Proud that Volunteers Medicine got to stand alongside so many dedicated leaders working to ensure every person in our state can access the care they deserve.

Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) began in Hilton Head, South Carolina—born out of the kind heart of a retired physician—Jack McConnell. The good doctor often gave rides to hitchhikers and was shocked to learn that many of them were among a much larger problem…millions of people with no access to healthcare through no fault of their own. Because he was a man of action, he started the first VIM clinic in 1993. Since that first clinic, VIM has become a national organization whose primary purpose is to establish neighborhood medical clinics that serve the uninsured families in a Culture of Caring.
The Heart and Soul of Every VIM Clinic: The Culture of Caring
Remembering that how people are treated is as important as the medical care they receive
Knowing those coming to us are good people in need of help who do their best to survive on limited resources, exhibiting great courage simply trying to get through each day
Recognizing the strengths of those in need and respecting their dignity
Seeking to heal not only physical illnesses, but also the injury caused by bias, prejudice and indifference
Culture of Caring Spreads to San Diego
Many residents of East County San Diego faced this same daunting issue of finding healthcare. VIM San Diego began working tirelessly to become a safety net for thousands of patients who do not have healthcare insurance.
We are a free medical clinic that serves thousands in need each year…there are no charges, bills or insurance forms to fill out. As you can imagine, an accomplishment of this magnitude took a significant amount of time, effort and dedication.
