A recent ECRMC visitor left this comment:

"Stopped by to visit a sick friend. The security personnel were such a big help. Francisco is professional, friendly, and even took time from his busy schedule to es**rt me. Selena greeted me with a smile, and she is very efficient with the computer. I was provided with exceptional service by these two."

Thank you, Selena and Francisco, for embodying our kind, helpful culture.

One day, as Catalina Arellano was volunteering at ECRMC, she visited the hospital's welcome desk to pick up a stuffed animal for a young patient. She was surprised to learn that the hospital had not received recent donations of stuffed animals. There were none to share.

"I felt really bad," Catalina shared. "That little kid really needed one."

So she went and did something about it. Catalina teamed up with her Girl Scout troop members Joselyn Amada, Maya Padilla and Angelique Martinez. Together, they tapped into some of their funds from selling Girl Scout cookies and bought stuffed animals to deliver to the hospital for the kids.

The entire ECRMC community extends their heartfelt thanks to Catalina, Joselyn, Maya, and Angelique for their selfless service. Their initiative has brought comfort to numerous children at the hospital during their time of sickness and pain.

As Catalina embarks on her journey to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, we wish her all the best. Her kindness and selflessness have already made a significant impact, and we are confident that she will continue to inspire and bless the community in her new home.

This news story from our neighboring community to the north discusses the rise of whooping cough cases in the United States. Thanks, NBC Palm Springs:

https://www.nbcpalmsprings.com/2025/08/04/new-warning-about-whooping-cough-cases-on-the-rise

Fortunately, most cases of whooping cough (also known as pertussis) are preventable with the time-tested Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis vaccine โ€” often referred to as DTaP or Tdap.

Pertussis can be particularly dangerous for infants and young children. Because vaccination efforts have prevented most cases of whooping cough for the past decades, we may not be familiar with what it looks like to live with the infection. This Mayo Clinic video of an infant with whooping cough provides some perspective:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3oZrMGDMMw.

Kids and adults who vaccinate can avoid the agony, such as intense, miserable coughing and gasping episodes. Sometimes the coughing is so intense that patients crack ribs and sustain other injuries.

We also encourage the vaccine because it prevents people from passing this highly contagious bacterium to others.

Weโ€™ve arrived at the hottest part of the summer. And if the heat of the Desert Southwest interrupts your sleep, youโ€™re not alone.

El Centro Regional Medical Center encourages you to create a cool sleeping environment to prevent heat from interrupting your restful slumber.

Good sleep is essential for your physical and mental well-being, but extreme heat can significantly disrupt sleep patterns. It can lead to restless nights, poor-quality rest, and general misery.

To stay cool at night, fans and air conditioning are essential here in the Imperial Valley. Set your bedroom to a comfortable temperature before going to bed.

Many of us are understandably frugal, and we save energy by tolerating higher temperatures in our living spaces. That may not pay off at night if the heat causes you to miss out on the deeper sleep you need to wake up refreshed.

At ECRMC, we stand with the many individuals and families in our Imperial Valley community who have been affected by lung cancer. This day is a powerful reminder of the importance of prevention, early detection, and continued support for those battling the disease.

Lung cancer is one of the most common and serious forms of cancerโ€”but when caught early, treatment outcomes can improve significantly.

Take a moment today to learn the risks, encourage loved ones to get screened, and prioritize your lung health. Together, we can raise awareness and support a healthier future for our valley.

At ECRMC, we see it every day. So many of our hospitalized patients deeply miss the companionship and comfort their pets provide.

A recent study by the University of Denverโ€™s Institute for Human-Animal Connection has highlighted the incredible stress-relieving benefits of owning a dog. ๐Ÿพ

According to the study, spending time with dogs can significantly reduce stress levels, lower blood pressure, and increase feelings of happiness and relaxation. Whether it's through daily walks, playtime, or simply the companionship they provide, dogs have a unique way of bringing joy and calm into our lives.

Almost certainly, those same benefits also hold true for cat owner and other pet owners.๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿ‡ If you're considering adding a pet friend to your family, now might be the perfect time! Not only will you gain a loyal companion, but you'll also be investing in your mental and emotional health.
