Spring is the season of renewal, and in Traditional Chinese Medicine, it’s also the time of the Liver.
The Liver is responsible for the smooth flow of Qi, our vital energy. When it’s in balance, we feel clear, motivated, and emotionally steady. When it’s not, we see “Liver heat” start to rise: irritability, tension, headaches, poor sleep, hormonal shifts, and an underlying sense of being wired or overwhelmed.
This year carries the bold, fast-moving energy of the Fire Horse: passionate and activating, but also intense. It can amplify patterns of stress, stagnation, and heat in the body if we’re already running full speed.
And also, now we move into Beltane: a seasonal turning point that celebrates fire, fertility, and full expression of life force (more heat!).
In functional medicine, we can see similar patterns reflected in lab results:
– Elevated liver enzymes (AST/ALT)
– Hormone imbalances
– Blood sugar dysregulation
- Gut absorption impairment
– Increased inflammatory markers
Different language, but the same message. The system is running hot and/or not moving efficiently.
When you support both the energetic and biochemical pathways, things start to shift towards more clarity & more resilience.
