Everyone be safe out there this weekend!
UPDATE (1/22/2026, 11:35 a.m.): The NWS has upgraded our Watch to a Winter Storm Warning, in effect from noon Friday until noon Sunday. Yay.
ORIGINAL POST:
Weβre just a day away from that very important point in the winter weather cycle: The Moment of Truth. That moment when one of two possibilities occurs:
β’ The winter storm arrives as predicted (with maybe a small 1-2 foot variance in total accumulations), or
β’ There is no winter storm (Storm? What storm? Who said anything about a snow storm?)
Right now, Mother Nature is still tracking her Winter Weather Wonderland toward us. Its arrival has been delayed a little bitβ¦ the white stuff is now expected to show up in our part of the state somewhere between 4pm and 8pm on Friday. But total snowfall predictions continue to beβ¦ robust. We now have a greater than 90% chance of seeing at least 4 inches of snow and about a 60% chance of seeing more than 8 inches of accumulation. Good news: we are still opting out of the freezing rain and ice (currently, the dividing line between all-snow and nasty-icy-mixed-precip appears to be the I-40 corridor down in Oklahoma. Stayβ¦ stayβ¦ stayβ¦.)
And as for the cold? Yepβ¦ still gonna be cold. The NWS has converted our Extreme Cold Watch to an βAir Will Hurt Your Face Advisory.β (Oh waitβ¦ it says Cold Weather Advisory. Close enough.) The temperature tumble starts overnight tonight as the mass of arctic air pushes into our neighborhood. By tomorrow morning, todayβs 30-degree start will sound toasty. The coldest morning (and the best chance of getting close to -20 wind chills here) will be Saturday morning. But the whole weekend (through at least Monday morning) should be enjoyableβ¦ for polar bears. (There is still time to buy a plane ticket to somewhere that doesnβt do winter. Tempting.)
