We are proud to share how our Family Medicine Residency and Surgical Obstetrics Fellowship programs are expanding maternal care in South Arkansas.

The Rural Track Family Medicine Residency will welcome its first class in 2026. Residents will spend their first year in Little Rock before transferring to El Dorado, where they will complete training in rural medicine with a strong focus on obstetrics.

The Surgical Obstetrics Fellowship, developed in 2024, equips family medicine physicians with advanced skills to strengthen maternal care in our region. In July 2025, the fellowship welcomed its first fellow, and two more fellows are set to begin in July 2026. Fellows in this program will remain at UAMS as faculty, where they expand access to maternal care in South Arkansas and play a vital role in teaching and mentoring our residents.

These programs are more than training opportunities. They are investments in the future of South Arkansas, ensuring families can receive care close to home.

During PGY3, our residents gain hands‑on experience in critical care medicine as part of the South Arkansas Regional Hospital team. Working in the ICU alongside physicians who provide 24‑hour care, they strengthen clinical skills while deepening their understanding of compassionate, patient‑centered healthcare.

With our core faculty and site directors for the program, they will help residents become the type of doctor they want to be! We will do great things in health care for South Arkansas!

On , here's a shoutout to UAMS' rural track residency programs at Crossett, Berryville/Eureka Springs and El Dorado. Dr. Donya Watson and Dr. C'Asia James at El Dorado offer obstetric care to patients in rural south Arkansas and recently presented on first trimester bleeding at the UAMS Family Medicine Grand Rounds. It's critical that rural family medicine providers are able to care for pregnant women since 14% of labor and delivery units in Arkansas have shut down since 2020 with another 24% at risk of closing. PGY1 is based in Little Rock, Arkansas. Most rotations take place at UAMS Medical Center, with additional training at Arkansas Children’s Hospital and continuity clinic at the UAMS Family Medical Center. Residents go through specialty rotations, bringing knowledge and connections with them to El Dorado.
