In the spring of 2025, history was made in our Borderplex

Forty graduates crossed the stage at the Plaza Theatre as the first-ever class of the Hunt School of Dental Medicine at Texas Tech Health El Paso, wearing lavender and purple velvet that symbolized not just a new degree, but a new chapter for oral health in our region.

Trained in medical Spanish, community health, and public service, these new D.M.D.s arrived from across Texas with a shared purpose: to serve communities that have waited far too long for access to a dentist’s chair.

Their story is one of trailblazing, representation, and impact, and it’s only the beginning.

Alongside members of the Hunt School of Dental Medicine and the Texas Tech Dental Oral Health Clinic, our community celebrated the 3rd annual Lighting Campus for Hope at Texas Tech Health El Paso.

Together, we honored this year’s campus accomplishments, highlighted the groundbreaking of the future Fox Cancer Center, and offered heartfelt appreciation to our cancer warriors for their inspiring stories and to our Borderplex residents for their unwavering support. Most importantly, we raised nearly $125,000 for patients to receive lifesaving cancer screenings.

That shared commitment to community well-being extends to oral cancer, where dentists play a vital role in early detection and prevention. Each year, more than 54,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer, and many of those cases are first identified in a dental office. Dentists serve as the first line of defense, recognizing early warning signs during routine checkups, often before symptoms appear.

With the Fox Cancer Center now under construction just one block from the Texas Tech Dental Oral Health Clinic, their proximity and shared mission will help ensure continuity of care. As part of the same health system, teams can communicate more easily, coordinate referrals, and create a more seamless patient experience, particularly for patients managing the oral health effects that often accompany cancer treatment.

Growing these connections reflects what Lighting Campus for Hope is all about: bringing our community together to strengthen patient care and save lives. Thank you to everyone who joined us this year’s celebration. Your support brightens the path toward better health for all.

🌟Diabetes Awareness Starts at Home, Especially Here in Our Borderplex🌟
Diabetes affects families in El Paso at higher rates than those in other regions, reminding us that caring for our health strengthens our community. 💙

With the holidays in full swing, it’s easy to indulge, but a few smart choices can make a big difference for those managing or preventing diabetes. We’re sharing helpful tips and resources to help you stay healthy and informed.

Thanks to support from the Paso del Norte Health Foundation through its partnership with the Hunt School of Dental Medicine, our patients receive an A1C test during routine dental exams. Patients with A1C levels of five or higher are offered a free finger-prick HbA1c screening. Because many people visit the dentist more often than their primary care physician, dentists are uniquely positioned to identify patients at risk of diabetes. The program has identified more than 330 at-risk patients in two years, and 26% of screened patients were prediabetic or diabetic, nearly three times the national rate.

For those found at risk, community health workers connect patients with diabetes resources and refer them to the appropriate healthcare professionals. This innovative collaboration is one of the few programs of its kind in the U.S., expanding access to early detection and vital support.

Small steps protect ourselves and our loved ones, create healthier traditions, and help ensure we enjoy many more holidays with the people we cherish. 💛

💫 Honoring Veteran's, Generosity, Excellence, and Community Spirit 💫
In 2022, El Paso orthodontist and U.S. Army veteran Dr. Jaime Rivera of Rivera Orthodontics, along with his wife, Karina Rivera, made a generous $25,000 commitment to the Hunt School of Dental Medicine Scholarship Fund at Texas Tech Health El Paso. 🎓🦷

Their gift supports , helping to relieve financial burdens for the next generation of leaders in oral health care so they can focus on their education and dedication to improving lives across our Borderplex.

Dr. Rivera served at Fort Bliss and spent a year in Iraq providing for anyone in need of dental care at Camp Bucca before ultimately choosing to make El Paso his family’s permanent home. Since opening Rivera Orthodontics (Rivera Orthodontics) in 2013, Dr. Rivera has become one of a handful of board-certified orthodontists in El Paso and a trusted leader in his field. Known for his compassionate approach and commitment to excellence, he has transformed countless smiles, and lives, through his work.

At the Hunt School of Dental Medicine, we share Dr. Rivera’s passion for service and lifelong learning. His generosity helps ensure that our students can continue building on this legacy, creating the next generation of oral health leaders who will serve our region with skill, integrity, and heart. 💙
