The Hunt School of Dental Medicine recently hosted its third session of the Special Care, Healthy Smiles oral health workshop series led by Dr. Wilma Luquis-Aponte and students. We are grateful to everyone who attended 🦷

This event offered caregivers practical strategies for delivering inclusive dental care for individuals with disabilities.

A sincere thank you to the Dental Trade Alliance Foundation for its generous support, which helped to provide free adaptive dental kits to all participants.

🎉 Congratulations to our incredible dean, Dr. Richard Black! 🎉

Dr. Richard Black, founding dean of the Hunt School of Dental Medicine, has been named a 2025 Junior Achievement of El Paso Business Hall of Fame laureate.

A proud El Paso native, Dr. Black returned to his roots after completing his education at Southern Methodist University and the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston. He went on to serve our community as an orthodontist for 40 years before becoming founding dean of the Hunt School of Dental Medicine.

For more than four decades, Dr. Black has demonstrated unwavering commitment to education, innovation, and public health, shaping the future of dentistry and making a lasting impact on our Borderplex.

✨ A couple of weekends ago, the Hunt School of Dental Medicine proudly welcomed the Class of 2029 at our fifth annual White Coat Ceremony. 🦷

Thanks to the generosity of our community, including many of our own faculty, each of the 59 students received their very first white coat, surrounded by family, friends, and the donors who believe in their future.

A special thank-you to Ed Anderson, CEO of Diversified Interiors, and Lori Anderson, whose steadfast support continues to lead the way. From our historic inaugural class to the four that followed, each has been gifted white coats thanks to their generous matching funds, which inspire others to invest in our .

We’re deeply grateful to every white coat sponsor who joined in supporting our students this year. Because of you, each white coat was fully sponsored-a powerful symbol of trust, encouragement, and belief in the next generation of oral health leaders. 🩺

59 students marked a new milestone as the fifth class in the school’s history to don their white coats. 🦷🤍

For these , putting on the coat and reciting their student oath in front of faculty, friends and family marks the first step of their dental school journey, a moment that transforms aspiration into commitment. ⚕️

The Hunt School of Dental Medicine was established to address a severe dentist shortage in Far West Texas, where El Paso County has just one dentist for every 4,840 residents, compared to the national average of one for every 1,638 residents.

The Class of 2029 represents the bright next generation of dental professionals cultivated in our Borderplex region and across the state, with 100% of students coming from Texas and New Mexico. Their journey begins HERE 📍 rooted in compassion, service, and a lifelong dedication to patient care.
