🐝 Summertime means cookouts, enjoying the outdoors, and BEES! Bee stings can be painful and cause localized reactions such as redness, swelling, and itching at the sting site. In most cases, these symptoms subside within a few hours or days. In the event you are stung follow these important tips:

- Quickly remove the stinger by using a straight edge like a credit card. Avoid using tweezers as this may release more venom!
- Applying ice or a cold compress to the affected area can help alleviate the pain and reduce swelling.
- Calamine lotion, ibuprofen, and antihistamines can also help alleviate the itching and swelling.

However, for some individuals, bee stings can result in allergic reactions or more severe symptoms. If you've been stung by a bee and experience difficulty breathing, dizziness, or widespread hives, it's important to get medical help immediately and seek a referral to an allergy provider. Your provider can offer preventive treatments like venom immunotherapy and help manage acute symptoms in the event you are stung again.

As we get into our summer season here are some tips for patients with sensitive skin and skin allergies:

Look for sunscreens with mineral UV sun blockers like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These ingredients are safe as they stay on the surface of the skin and not absorbed.

Chemical filters like avobenzone, oxybenzone, octinoxate, and homosalate should be avoided as many people experience allergic reactions to these chemicals. Oxybenzone has also been associated with potential hormone disruption and has raised environmental concerns due to its impact on coral reefs.
