At Speech Start we take a holistic approach to speech therapy. Our approach looks at the whole person when establishing goals and choosing therapy activities. Some speech sounds emerge earlier because they are easier for the child to make and much more visible.

Producing speech sounds and combining those speech sounds into words is a coordinated and complicated process for young children. So, toddlers naturally use simplification processes to allow them to communicate while their oral motor and cognitive function continues to develop and mature.

Check out the graphics below to learn what sounds to model for your toddler (relative to their age and current speech abilities) and where those sounds are produced in the mouth.

Encourage your child to watch your mouth (e.g. hold the desired item near your face). If you are working on imitation, focus on front of the mouth sounds that are very visible like /m/ in "ma" and keep is short (one syllable).
