🔹 How to treat it?
Fever is a symptom, not a sickness. In most cases, it’s a healthy response to infection. But if your child is under 1 month or seems seriously unwell, always seek medical care right away.
• Use paracetamol (or ibuprofen if older than 6 months) only if your child is uncomfortable — not just to lower the number.
• Keep them hydrated, lightly dressed, and let them rest.
• It’s okay if they want to play — that’s usually a good sign!

• If your child is well-appearing, eating, drinking, and has a low-grade fever (100–101°F), you may not need to visit the pediatrician right away.
• It’s okay to wait and observe — many viruses resolve on their own, and new symptoms may help guide treatment.
• Most fevers are caused by viral infections, which do not need antibiotics.
• Seeing your pediatrician is often about making sure there’s not a bacterial infection — but most of the time, you’ll leave with just supportive care like acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
• Treat your child, not just the number. If they’re uncomfortable, fever medicine can help them rest and feel better.

🔹 When should you be concerned? 🤒
🚨 If your baby is under 1 month old and has a fever, go straight to the nearest emergency department.
Newborns have immature immune systems, and even minor infections can become serious fast.

Other red flags at any age:
⚠️ Fever lasting more than 3 days
⚠️ Child is very drowsy, irritable, or not drinking
⚠️ Difficulty breathing, persistent vomiting, or rash

🔹 Why you shouldn’t fear a fever🌡️
Fever itself doesn’t cause brain damage or long-term issues. It’s just a sign the body is fighting something. What matters is how your child looks and acts, not just their temperature.
⚡ Worried about febrile seizures? They can be scary but are rare (affecting about 2–5% of kids), and most have no lasting effects. Always call your doctor if one happens, but know they usually have excellent outcomes.
We will talk more about febrile seizures for our next monthly theme.

🏥Complications from Jaundice

Neonatal jaundice is often manageable and treatable. The key is to follow your pediatrician’s guidance, ensure regular feedings, and attend all follow-up appointments to monitor bilirubin levels. If you notice worsening symptoms (specially after day 4 of life), such as excessive sleepiness 💤, poor feeding🍼, or deep yellowing of the skin 🟡, don’t hesitate to seek medical attention ⚕️immediately!

While most cases of neonatal jaundice are harmless, it’s crucial to address severe or prolonged jaundice promptly, as it can lead to complications, including:

🟡Kernicterus: This is a rare but serious condition where extremely high bilirubin levels damage the brain, leading to potential developmental delays, hearing loss, or cerebral palsy.

🟡Prolonged Jaundice: If jaundice persists for weeks, it may signal underlying conditions such as infections, enzyme deficiencies, or liver diseases that require further investigation and treatment.

💛How to Treat Jaundice💛

Treatment depends on the severity of the jaundice. Common interventions include:

👀Monitoring: In mild cases, jaundice often resolves with regular feeding and careful observation by your healthcare provider.

☀️Phototherapy/Sunbaths: This is the most widely used treatment. Special blue light breaks down bilirubin in the baby’s skin, making it easier for the body to eliminate it. Sunlight can also help breakdown bilirrubin in the skin, but its important to avoid direct sunlight since it can cause severe sun burns in baby’s immature skin.

🍼🤱Feeding Support: Frequent breastfeeding or formula feeding can help the baby’s body clear bilirubin through bowel movements.

🩸Exchange Transfusion: In severe cases, when bilirubin levels are dangerously high, a blood transfusion may be needed to reduce bilirubin quickly.

What is Jaundice?

Jaundice is a condition that causes yellowing of a newborn’s skin and eyes. It occurs when there is too much bilirubin—a yellow pigment produced during the breakdown of old red blood cells—in the baby’s blood.

Newborns are particularly prone to jaundice because their immature liver may not yet efficiently process bilirubin. Jaundice is common in the first few days after birth and often resolves on its own. Levels are highest at day 4 of life. However, in some cases, it may require medical attention, especially if the bilirubin levels become too high.
