University Medical Center of El Paso’s Digestive Health Center turned blue today for ! 💙

“Dress In Blue Day” raises awareness for colore**al cancer, one of the most preventable cancers when detected early. We are seeing more cases in people in their 30s and 40s, making early detection more important than ever.

The recommended age to get screened is 45. However, anyone under 45 who experiences symptoms such as re**al bleeding, persistent changes in bowel habits, unexplained fatigue, or abdominal pain should seek medical evaluation.

If you have a family history of colon cancer, you should begin screening 10 years earlier than the age at which your youngest relative was diagnosed.

UMC’s Digestive Health Center leads the region in advanced gastrointestinal care, with board-certified Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso and UMC specialists.

UMC is the only hospital in the region recognized as a Center of Excellence for functional gastrointestinal disorders. Its advanced endoscopy unit serves as a regional referral center, performing the most complex interventional and therapeutic procedures.

“The Most Powerful Tool in Medicine to Save Lives” UMC Gastroenterologist Urges Colon Cancer Screening.

March is Colore**al Cancer Awareness Month, and UMC Gastroenterologist Dr. Cesar Garcia says colore**al cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, yet it remains a leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Almost all colon cancers begin as small growths called polyps. During a colonoscopy, these polyps can be found and removed before they turn into cancer.

“By getting a colonoscopy, you are actively preventing cancer, not just looking for it,” said Dr. Garcia.

The recommended age to get screened is 45. However, we are seeing a rise in colon cancer in younger adults, and Dr. Garcia urges anyone under 45 who experiences symptoms such as re**al bleeding, persistent changes in bowel habits, unexplained fatigue, or abdominal pain to seek medical evaluation promptly.

Additionally, if you have a family history of colon cancer, you should begin screening 10 years earlier than the age at which your youngest relative was diagnosed.

Today was for them. 💙

UMC’s Growth & Resiliency team hosted a pilot Healing Rounds Retreat created especially for our frontline bedside nurses and nurse leaders. As a Level 1 Trauma Center, our nurses show up every day with compassion, strength, and skill, often in the most intense and stressful moments of care.

This retreat was intentionally designed to honor that work, offering space for restoration, reflection, and overall wellbeing. It was a moment to pause, breathe, reconnect, and be cared for.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to support those who give so much and excited to continue growing this program and rolling it out across our nursing team. 🌿✨

Congratulations on your retirement, UMC Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Joel Hendryx!

For the past eight years, Dr. Hendryx has served as a steady force of leadership throughout some of UMC's hardest moments, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the Aug. 3, 2019 mass shooting.

Reflecting on the Aug. 3 tragedy, Dr. Hendryx said the experience will always stay with him.

“It will always be with us, and everyone has that moment of 'where were you?' during that time and 'how did it affect you?' Whether it was a loved one, family, Associate, the victims, those that we took care of. Getting to know them and their families was very emotional. Even today, it's still emotional,” said Dr. Hendryx.

Dr. Hendryx is optimistic about the future of UMC as he retires. UMC’s new chief medical officer, Dr. Victor Waters, worked closely with Dr. Hendryx during his last months at UMC.

Closing out his final year at UMC with momentous achievements for the hospital, as it celebrates its 111th anniversary.

Thank you, Dr. Hendryx, for all you've done for our community. We wish you a well-deserved retirement!

Care on Campus!

Our UMC Sports Rehab and Outpatient Clinic teams were proud to partner with UTEP for the HOPE+ Health Fair.

The on-campus event provided free health resources to UTEP students and the El Paso Community.

Our rehab team shared information about our specialized sports rehab program, answered questions, and connected with students and families about injury prevention and recovery.

In honor of National Heart Month, our outpatient clinic teams shared important information about heart health and our specialty cardiology services available at our clinic locations throughout the community.

Thank you UTEP College of Health Sciences for hosting this event!
