Inspired by our own!

Meet Brenda Giron a Registered Nurse for Cardiology at UMC’s West Clinic.

Brenda says she was a patient at UMC years ago when she was being treated for thyroid cancer, and it was her experience with the nurses during her treatment that inspired her to pursue a career.

"I am a thyroid cancer survivor, and I was treated very well at UMC. That was 20 years ago, and I never forgot. That inspired me, that was one of the reasons," said Giron.

She says she is grateful to now be there for others in her community, just as her nurses were there for her.
"I want to give patients the quality care that everyone deserves because I’ve been there," said Giron.

Thank you, Brenda, for taking your story and turning it into helping others. We appreciate everything you do!

April is Occupational Therapy Awareness Month!

Our Occupational Therapy team works with patients recovering from strokes, injuries, surgeries, and cancer treatment through hand therapy, splinting, aquatic rehab, wound and burn care, lymphedema treatment, sports rehab, and more.

At UMC, we’re proud to have a dedicated team of approximately 30 Occupational Therapy (OT) professionals serving patients across our hospital and clinics.

"We help patients return to their daily lives after injuries, strokes, surgeries, and even cancer treatment, work on restoring functions like activities like dressing, bathing, upper extremity use while also addressing strength coordination, balance, and even things like mental health, depending on the needs of the individual patients," said Jesus Delgado UMC Occupational Therapist, and Manager of Rehab Services at UMC's Northeast Clinic.

Our Occupational Therapists help patients regain independence and achieve their highest level of recovery.

Thank you to our Occupational Therapists for all you do every day!

A story that makes us smile! 😊

UMC is proud to have been a part of Mr. Kalman’s journey and of the incredible work of Dr. Hans Brockhoff with UMC Healthcare Partners' High Desert Oral and Facial Surgery's Cimarron Office, who helped restore his smile after his teeth were removed during cancer surgery.

This story reminds us how the El Paso community comes together to support one another in times of need.

Caring beyond the hospital walls.

UMC’s Emergency Department was proud to join UTEP’s H.O.P.E+ Mobile Clinic and Health Fair at University Presbyterian Church, focused on prevention and health education.

The event offered blood pressure checks, blood glucose testing, health education, screenings, vaccines, haircuts and more for the community.

UMC’s Emergency Department is a Level 2 Geriatric Emergency Department. The team was grateful for the opportunity to connect with older adults in the community and share how UMC supports age-friendly care.

UMC's emergency departments are committed to providing the best possible care for our aging community with mobility aids and nutrition support, as well as coordinated follow-up care across inpatient, home, rehabilitation and long-term care settings.

UMC has Level 2 Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation from the American College of Emergency Physicians, as well as a Level 2 Age-Friendly: Committed to Care Excellence designation at our west, east, Fabens and Ysleta outpatient clinics from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI).

At UMC, we care for El Paso.

Inspired by Family, Caring for Yours!

Meet Yolanda Hernandez, a Charge Nurse in UMC's Surgical and Telemetry Unit. In her role, Yolanda oversees patient care and ensures each patient receives the attention and support they need.

Yolanda’s passion for healthcare was inspired by her upbringing with her grandfather.

“I grew up with my grandfather since I was four years old, so I have always been around elderly people,” she shares. “Working with them is my calling. You have to treat everyone as family.”

Yolanda also recalls being by her sister’s side during labor, which also inspired her to become a nurse.

Thank you, Yolanda, for following your calling and making a difference in our community every day!

Excellence in Epilepsy Care

KFOX-TV and KTSM 9 News toured UMC’s Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and spoke with surgeons who provide the highest level of care for patients with complex epilepsy.

UMC is now an accredited Level 4 Epilepsy Center by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC).

Dr. Patrick Cotton, a neurosurgeon with UMC Healthcare Partners’ Nexus Neurosciences, spoke about the importance of providing access to advanced epilepsy care within the community.

"I think it's great for the people of El Paso that we can offer this locally. In the past, patients would have had to travel to Phoenix, Albuquerque, or San Antonio. Now, the people of El Paso have the opportunity to get this done," said Dr. Cotton.

UMC provides comprehensive diagnosis and treatment, including specialized monitoring, medication management and surgical capabilities, delivered by a multidisciplinary team of neurologists, neurosurgeons, EEG technologists, neuropsychologists, radiologists and a neuro ICU team.

"We have more dedicated epilepsy surgeons who are doing more consistent epilepsy surgeries," said Dr. Sushma Yerram, Medical Director for UMC’s Epilepsy Unit, Assistant Professor of Neurology at Texas Tech Health EP.

Behind-the-Scenes Look at Robotic Surgery

UMC was the first teaching hospital in Texas, and the only one in the region, to fully upgrade its robotic surgery systems to the state-of-the-art da Vinci 5 platform with dual teaching consoles.

Dr. Alonso Andrade, surgical medical director at UMC and associate professor at Texas Tech Health El Paso, gave the KVIA ABC-7 team firsthand look at the da Vinci 5 surgical system, as the team suited up and headed into the UMC operating room.

Dr. Andrade demonstrated the robot’s advanced features, including AI-powered analytics, high-definition 3D visualization, and enhanced ergonomics, enhancing safety and accuracy.

The Science Behind it All!🌏

This year, the World Health Organization highlights the power of scientific collaboration to protect and improve health worldwide.

At UMC, that mission comes to life every day.

Dr. Jesus Gomez, medical director of oncology at UMC, says it is important to help patients understand their care. By using visual tools and imaging, he makes complex medical information easier to follow.

"Since it is so difficult to understand medical jargon, it is much easier for patients to see their tumor shrinking with therapy," Gomez said. "There are computers in every exam room, so I can pull up teaching materials and show patients exactly what is happening."

He said patient education goes hand in hand with staying current on the latest science.

“In the field of oncology, things change so rapidly that it’s important to always look at what’s new for each patient’s specific disease," said Dr. Gomez.

Gomez also pointed to the role of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, where experts review research and develop standardized treatment guidelines.

"Every patient I see requires me to review what is new, what has been published and what is considered the standard of care," he said.

UMC is proud of its physicians who work every day to build trust with our community and help patients understand the science behind their care while staying up to date on the latest advancements to provide the best possible treatment.

Young Voices Shine🌟

UMC is proud of our Junior Volunteer, Alejandra Meza, who had the opportunity to attend the Commission on the Status of Women conference at the United Nations in New York last month. During the conference, she gave a speech, met with advocates, and highlighted her experience at UMC.

“Through every challenge, I learned the importance of being emotionally strong, adaptable, open‑minded, friendly, and calm. I’ve learned that even small actions, such as a simple smile, a pat on the back, a compassionate word, can uplift someone who is having a hard day,” Alejandra said in her speech about volunteering at UMC.

Alejandra’s connection to UMC began with her father, Uziel Meza, who is a manager in Food Services for UMC. She spoke about spending time at the hospital when she was younger.

“I still recall sitting in the cafeteria, waiting for him to finish his shift, as my eyes wandered around the melting pot of the hospital during the lunch hour rush, a place full of energy, diversity, and dedication. Those early experiences shaped my passion for healthcare and inspired me to pursue the path I am on today,” Alejandra said in her speech.

She also spoke about her experiences connecting with and giving back to her community through volunteering.

“I’ve met people who feel misunderstood or overlooked due to language or cultural differences. These experiences have helped me recognize that healthcare is more than medicine; it is dignity, safety, and equity,” said Alejandra.

Thank Alejandra for representing UMC so well, and for all you do as a volunteer. We are proud of you and appreciate you very much!

This top-tier designation means UMC can perform the highest level of medical and surgical care for patients with complex epilepsy, including advanced surgical procedures that can bring real relief and improved quality of life.

With this upgrade from Level 3 to Level 4, UMC continues to lead the way, becoming the first hospital in El Paso to achieve this distinction.

UMC provides comprehensive diagnosis and treatment, specialized monitoring, medication management, and surgical capabilities from a multifaceted team of neurologists, neurosurgeons, EEG technologists, neuropsychologists, radiologists and a Neuro ICU team.

According to the NAEC, epilepsy affects an estimated 3.4 million people in the United States, making access to advanced care more important than ever.

We’re proud to provide our community with the highest level of epilepsy care.
