What Is a Groin Strain—and How Is It Treated? 🦵💥

A groin strain occurs when the muscles of the inner thigh (adductors) are stretched too far or torn. These muscles help bring your legs together and stabilize your hips during movement.

Common causes include:

Sudden direction changes or pivoting
Sprinting or jumping movements
Overstretching the inner thigh
Returning to activity too quickly
Symptoms:

Pain in the inner thigh or groin
Tenderness or swelling
Weakness when bringing the legs together
Pain with walking, running, or side movements
How is it treated?

Treatment depends on severity and may include:

Rest and activity modification
Ice and anti-inflammatory medication
Compression and support
Physical therapy to restore strength and flexibility
More severe strains may require additional evaluation and rehabilitation.

If pain is persistent or limits movement, an orthopaedic evaluation can help guide treatment.

Muscle Strain vs. Muscle Cramp: What’s the Difference? 💪⚡

Muscle pain isn’t always the same. Understanding whether it’s a muscle strain or a muscle cramp can help guide the right care.

Muscle Strain 💥

An injury where muscle fibers are overstretched or torn.

Often happens during sudden movement or activity
Pain may feel sharp or pulling
Can include swelling, bruising, or weakness
Pain may last days to weeks
Muscle Cramp ⚡

A sudden, involuntary tightening of a muscle.

Happens quickly and unexpectedly
Feels tight, hard, or knotted
Usually lasts seconds to minutes
Often improves with stretching or movement
Key Difference:

A muscle strain is an injury to the muscle, while a muscle cramp is a temporary muscle contraction.

If pain is severe, persistent, or affecting movement, an orthopaedic evaluation can help determine the cause.

Hip Pain vs. Lower Back Pain: How Can You Tell the Difference? 🦴

Pain in the hip and lower back can feel similar—but often comes from different sources.

Hip Pain 🦴

Felt in the groin, outer hip, or front of the thigh
May worsen with walking or rotating the leg
Can cause stiffness in the joint
Often related to arthritis, bursitis, or labral issues
Lower Back Pain 💥

Located in the lower spine
May radiate into the buttocks or legs
Can include numbness or tingling
Often worsens with bending, lifting, or sitting
Key Difference:

Hip pain is often felt in the groin or outer hip, while back pain usually starts in the spine and may radiate downward.

If pain is persistent or limiting your movement, an orthopaedic evaluation can help identify the source.

Arthritis Pain vs. Injury Pain: How Can You Tell the Difference? 🦴⚡

Joint pain can come from different causes. Understanding whether it’s due to arthritis or an injury can help guide the right care.

Arthritis Pain 🦴

Pain caused by wear-and-tear or inflammation in the joints.

Develops gradually over time
Feels stiff, achy, or sore
Often worse in the morning or after inactivity
May improve slightly with movement
Injury Pain ⚡

Pain caused by sudden damage to muscles, ligaments, or joints.

Often begins suddenly after an activity or movement
May feel sharp or intense
Can include swelling, bruising, or instability
Pain may worsen with use of the injured area
Key Difference:

Arthritis pain develops slowly over time, while injury pain usually starts suddenly after a specific event.

If pain is persistent, worsening, or affecting daily movement, an orthopaedic evaluation can help determine the cause.

What Is Runner’s Knee—and How Is It Treated? 🦵🏃‍♂️

Runner’s knee (patellofemoral pain syndrome) is a condition that causes pain around the front of the knee, where the kneecap meets the thigh bone. It’s often related to how the kneecap tracks during movement.

Common causes include:

Increased activity like running, walking, or stairs
Muscle imbalances or weakness
Overuse or repetitive knee motion
Poor movement mechanics
Symptoms:

Dull, aching pain in the front of the knee
Pain when going up or down stairs
Discomfort after sitting for long periods
Pain with running, squatting, or kneeling
How is it treated?

Most cases improve with nonsurgical care, including:

Activity modification
Physical therapy to improve strength and alignment
Anti-inflammatory medication
Supportive bracing if needed
If knee pain persists or limits activity, an orthopaedic evaluation can help determine the cause and guide treatment.

What Is a Calf Strain—and How Is It Treated? 🦵💥

A calf strain, often called a pulled calf muscle, occurs when the muscles in the back of the lower leg are overstretched or torn. This injury commonly happens during sudden movements like running, jumping, or pushing off the foot.

Common causes include:

Sudden acceleration during sports

Jumping or quick changes in direction

Overuse or muscle fatigue

Returning to activity after a period of inactivity

Symptoms:

Sudden sharp pain in the calf

Tightness or muscle weakness

Swelling or bruising in the lower leg

Difficulty walking or pushing off the foot

How is it treated?

Treatment depends on the severity of the strain and may include:

Rest and activity modification

Ice and anti-inflammatory medication

Compression and elevation

Physical therapy to restore strength and flexibility

More severe muscle tears may require additional evaluation and rehabilitation.

If calf pain is severe or makes walking difficult, an orthopaedic evaluation can help determine the cause and guide treatment.
