We believe the most important aspects of providing quality care are listening to the needs of our patients and involving the patient in the treatment plan. We like to take the time to educate patients and present treatment options. When you come to your appointment, surgery may not be your only option; we like to explore other options such as rehabilitation and available prescriptions as methods of conservative treatment. If you do require surgery, you will be an integral part of the decision and we will walk with you through the entire healing process.

🔍 Injury Spotlight: Sciatica

Nerve pain vs. Muscle pain

Feels like:
• Burning or shooting pain
• Pain that travels down the leg
• Tingling or numbness rather than soreness

Helpful distinction — Nerve vs. Muscle pain:
• Nerve pain: sharp, electric, burning, or radiating
• Muscle pain: dull, achy, tight, or sore in one spot

Sciatica is nerve-related, which is why the pain often moves instead of staying localized.

Common signs we see:
• Leg pain stronger than back pain
• Symptoms worsen with sitting, standing, or certain movements
• Pain that doesn’t fully resolve with rest

When to get it checked:
• Pain isn’t improving
• Numbness or weakness is increasing
• Daily activities or sleep are affected

✨ If your pain feels more “electric” than sore, it may be nerve-related—and getting clarity matters.

When Does a Sprained Ankle Need Medical Care? 🦶🩺

Many ankle sprains can heal with rest and proper care—but some need medical attention to prevent long-term problems.

👉 You should see a doctor if:

You can’t put weight on your foot

Swelling or bruising is severe or worsening

Pain doesn’t improve after a few days

Your ankle feels unstable or keeps “giving out”

You hear or feel a pop at the time of injury

The injury keeps happening again and again

🔹 Why it matters:
Untreated or severe ankle sprains can lead to chronic ankle instability, ongoing pain, or repeat injuries.

What to expect from an evaluation:

A physical exam to check ligament stability

Imaging (like X-rays or MRI) if needed

A personalized treatment plan, which may include bracing, physical therapy, or further care

Early evaluation helps ensure proper healing and a safer return to daily activities or sports.

📞 Call Sun City Ortho at (915) 581-0712 or visit suncityorthoandhand.com to schedule an ankle evaluation.

How Cold Weather Affects Muscles, Joints, and Tendons ❄️💪

Cold weather can make your body feel stiffer and more uncomfortable—especially if you already have joint or muscle pain.

👉 Here’s why cold temperatures can affect the body:

Muscles tighten in the cold, which can reduce flexibility

Joints may feel stiffer due to decreased movement and circulation

Tendons and ligaments can become less elastic, increasing the risk of strain

Cold weather often leads to less physical activity, which can worsen stiffness

🔹 Common symptoms people notice:

Increased joint stiffness or soreness

Muscle tightness

Aches that feel worse in the morning or after sitting

What helps during colder months?

Stay active with gentle movement and stretching

Warm up before exercise or physical activity

Dress in layers to keep muscles warm

Maintain strength and flexibility with physical therapy if needed

If cold-weather aches don’t improve or begin interfering with daily activities, it may be time to see a specialist.

What Is Shoulder Impingement Syndrome—and How Is It Treated? 🦴💪

Shoulder Impingement Syndrome occurs when the tendons or bursa in the shoulder become pinched or irritated during arm movement. This often happens when lifting the arm overhead and can lead to pain and limited motion over time.

👉 Common causes:

Repetitive overhead activities (lifting, throwing, swimming, painting)

Poor posture or muscle imbalance

Bone spurs or structural changes in the shoulder

Inflammation of the rotator cuff or shoulder bursa

🔹 Symptoms:

Shoulder pain when lifting the arm or reaching overhead

Pain that worsens at night or when lying on the affected side

Weakness or reduced range of motion

How is it treated?

Most cases respond well to nonsurgical care, including:

Rest and activity modification

Physical therapy to improve strength and shoulder mechanics

Anti-inflammatory medications or steroid injections

Surgery may be recommended if symptoms persist and movement is significantly limited.

Early treatment can help prevent rotator cuff damage and restore comfortable shoulder movement.

📞 Call Sun City Ortho at (915) 581-0712 or visit suncityorthoandhand.com to schedule a shoulder evaluation.
