When it comes to a stroke, every second counts, especially for our littlest patients. Children are not just miniature adults. Their brains and medical needs require a completely different level of care.

That is why El Paso Children’s Hospital stands as the region’s leading expert in pediatric stroke care. 🧠✨

Our hospital has developed a specialized Pediatric Stroke Algorithm backed by a full spectrum of pediatric specialty doctors who understand the unique complexities of a child’s nervous system.

Here is why families trust us in the moments that matter most:

- Our teams are rigorously trained for pediatric stroke recognition.

- We have specific protocols in place for timely recognition and intervention 24/7.

- We bring together the region’s top pediatric specialists for seamless care.

When the unthinkable happens, come to the regional experts who are uniquely built to save young lives.

This May, we recognized National Speech, Language and Hearing Month.

Our Speech-language Pathologists at El Paso Children’s Hospital help children with any speech, language, cognitive or feeding disorders through specific therapies to enhance their overall quality of life.

Therapies can include practicing sounds using new words, trying new foods or problem solving activities.

Children who have difficulty reaching communication milestones or suffer a neurological event, benefit most from these therapies.

You can help a child’s communication development by:
· Focusing on the message, not the mistakes.
· Responding to their communication attempts.
· Exposing them to lots of language. (Reading books)
· Using the language you’re most comfortable with.

Thank you to all of our pediatric Speech-language pathologists for ensuring El Paso’s children acquire the skills needed for their future.

As we continue to highlight EMS Week, this story reflects the lifesaving collaboration between EMS and El Paso Children’s Hospital, where rapid response in the field and specialized pediatric emergency care come together to ensure children receive the highest level of treatment when every second counts.

Children are not small adults, pediatric emergencies require specialized teams, training, and resources. We honor the heroes, because of their rapid response and medical expertise, Jayden was able to go home and do what he loves. We are grateful to see him recover fully, return home healthy, and get back to playing football, school, and life with his family and friends.

Together, EMS and El Paso Children’s Hospital continue improving outcomes for the children in our region.

POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) affects how the body controls blood flow. 💙

This can cause:
• Dizziness, blurry vision, syncope, or fainting
• Rapid heartbeat (30–40 bpm increase when a child goes from lying to standing)
• Rapid heartbeats, palpitations, chest pain, fatigue

It often starts around puberty but can happen at any age, sometimes after illness, surgery, or trauma.

If your child is experiencing these symptoms, schedule an appointment with
Natalia Betancourt-Guzmán, MD, Pediatric Cardiologist at El Paso Children’s Hospital.
