Our Path to a Thriving El Paso
Back in the 1990’s, El Paso business, civic and government leaders moved forward on a plan to transform the region’s economy, which was primarily comprised of low-wage, low-skill jobs. Understanding a critical need for improved health care in the Paso del Norte region, these leader envisioned a health care “center of excellence” in the heart of the city. The medical hub that would be created would also produce high-skill, high wage jobs, highly trained professionals, and would attract investment in biotech to kick-start the transformation of the region’s economy, while improving health care for the region’s residents. From this vision the Medical Center of the Americas Foundation was born.
The Medical Center of the Americas (MCA) Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that works to advance the development a growing hub of innovation for the region’s health care and biomedical industries. The MCA seeks to connect, develop, and incubate the life science industry and improve healthcare across the Paso del Norte region and we are on our way to completing our goals and vision for the campus and the region.
The MCA now leads the development of a 440 acre medical and biotech campus in South Central El Paso. The MCA Campus nucleus of new and proliferating medical facilities (in El Paso, Texas) includes Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, its primary teaching hospital University Medical Center of El Paso and the new El Paso Children’s Hospital. It is also site to a developing biomedical research park, being spearheaded by the MCA Foundation. Additionally, the MCA Foundation and its subsidiary companies are leading the effort to expand the region’s biomedical industry through research and innovation, product development and the incubation of startup companies.
All in all, the MCA Foundation wants to see our region grow and wants to see our people thrive. El Paso is a city on the move; more and more people are discovering why El Paso is such a great place to live and work, and we as the MCA Foundation see a bright future here.
