🌿 Home Births Are a Family Event 💛

At Attuned Midwifery Services, we believe that birth is not just a medical event—it’s a family event. When you choose to give birth at home, you're surrounded by the familiar faces and comforts of your loved ones, making it an experience that’s deeply personal, intimate, and empowering.

Why Home Birth is a Family Event:
✨ Bonding with Your Partner
Home birth allows your partner to be fully involved in the experience. From offering physical support during labor to being there for the first moments of your baby’s life, a home birth creates a space for both of you to share in the joy and power of bringing your child into the world. It’s a moment that strengthens your bond as a couple and as parents.

✨ Sibling Involvement
One of the most beautiful aspects of home birth is that siblings can be part of the process, should they wish. Older siblings can be involved in the excitement of preparing the space, welcoming the baby, and even sharing in the magical first moments after birth. This helps create a sense of family unity and connection, making the birth of a new sibling an exciting adventure for everyone.

✨ Your Support Network
Unlike a hospital setting, where visitors may be limited, a home birth allows your extended family and friends to be part of your support system, helping you feel grounded and loved. Whether it’s a close friend who’s been with you through your pregnancy journey, or a grandmother there to witness the birth of her grandchild, home birth creates the opportunity for family to be at the heart of the experience.

✨ Comfort and Familiarity
There’s something truly special about giving birth in the comfort of your own home. Being in your familiar environment—surrounded by personal items, soft lighting, and soothing sounds—helps create a calm and peaceful atmosphere that supports not just the birthing person, but the entire family. It’s a place where you feel safe, in control, and able to fully experience the moment without distractions.

🐥 Tuesday Tip #20: Start Tummy Time Early

Tummy time builds neck and shoulder strength, prevents flat head syndrome, and supports developmental milestones.

✨ Midwife Advice:
Begin with 1–2 minutes several times a day, gradually increasing as baby grows comfortable. Always supervise tummy time.

Make it fun — get down on the floor, use toys or mirrors, and sing songs to encourage your baby’s natural curiosity and movement.

Small daily sessions add up to big developmental gains!

✨ What makes home births so special? ✨

For many families, choosing a home birth isn’t just about where the baby is born—it’s about how the experience feels. 🏡💗

🤝 Support: You get uninterrupted time with your chosen birth team, free from unnecessary interventions.
💤 Rest: No packing up or moving after birth—you get to cuddle up in your own bed.

💫 Empowerment: Birth becomes a deeply personal, intimate event—one that reflects your values and choices.

At Attuned Midwifery Services, we believe every birth should feel safe, supported, and sacred. For many families, home birth makes that possible. 💕

🌿 Natural Pain Management Options for Home Births 💛

At Attuned Midwifery Services, we believe in offering families the tools and support they need to have an empowered and peaceful birth. Many families choose home birth because it allows them to labor in a familiar, comfortable environment, and often, they prefer to manage pain in a natural way. Here are some natural pain management options we offer for home births:

1. Water Birth and Water Immersion
Water is one of the most soothing ways to manage pain during labor. The buoyancy of the water helps relax the muscles, ease tension, and provide natural pain relief by allowing you to move freely and find more comfortable positions. Many mothers find the warm water helps them feel calm and in control throughout the labor process.

2. Breathing Techniques
Breathing exercises are a powerful tool for managing pain and staying calm during contractions. Techniques like deep belly breathing and slow, controlled exhalation can help reduce tension and promote relaxation. Our midwives will guide you through these techniques during labor to help you stay focused and present.

3. Positioning and Movement
Changing positions and staying active can be a highly effective way to manage pain. Our midwives will guide you through positions like squatting, kneeling, or swaying, which help open the pelvis and relieve pressure on the back. Walking around, rocking on a birthing ball, or using a birthing stool can also help manage discomfort and keep the labor progressing smoothly.

4. Massage and Counterpressure
Gentle massage can help reduce tension, ease pain in the lower back, and create a relaxing atmosphere. Counterpressure (applying firm pressure to certain areas of the body) can provide targeted relief, especially during intense contractions. Our midwives are trained in these techniques.

Every birth is unique, and we’re committed to ensuring you have the tools, resources, and support to experience a peaceful and positive birth in the comfort of your own home.

🤱 Tuesday Tip #19: Babywearing Benefits

Wearing your baby close supports:
• Emotional bonding
• Temperature regulation
• Breastfeeding on demand
• Baby’s physical development
• Your hands-free freedom!

✨ Midwife Tip:
Choose ergonomic carriers that support baby’s hips and spine in the “M” position. Start slowly and practice safety — we offer babywearing demos and referrals to local educators.

Babywearing isn’t just practical — it’s midwifery care in motion!

Last weekend, Lety Knight and I got to attend the Birth Emergency Skills Training with many other of our local and traveling birthworker colleagues. We teamed up with Marisol Arreola and Stephanie Murillo, amazing midwives that serve the Borderlands. We practiced our skills for breech birth, twins birth, shoulder dystocia, occipital posterior rotation, postpartum hemorrhage, cervical dilation, fetal positioning, suturing, IVs, and more! The weekend was intense as we learned new skills and practiced some skills we were already familiar with.

As part of our licensure, we are required to fulfill a certain amount of continuing education units. This is how to hone our skills, learn new skills, and commune with other birth workers. We love to learn of new evidence-based practices, and consider midwifery to be a life-long learning pursuit. We also know that drilling certain skills helps create the muscle memory so that in the event we need to use those skills, we don’t have to think really hard about it, we can just jump in. We don’t have to use a lot of these skills often, because a lot of the time, birth just goes very smoothly all on it’s own. We are there for when things don’t go as smoothly and need some support.

We are dedicated to serving our families as well as we can, and with solid skills and up-to-date information. We are always striving to be better!

We love learning with our friend and colleagues. It’s hard to face some of these really intense topics, but we felt the support of our community as we worked through it. We also got a bit silly at times, humor helps!

Annie K***z, CPM, LM

Midwife Annie K***z is a Certified Professional Midwife licensed in the states of Texas and New Mexico. In 2001, Annie began her journey learning the art of midwifery at Casa de Nacimiento, a busy birth center in El Paso, Texas. She witnessed her first birth only three hours after arriving at the birth center, and instantly knew birth was her calling. Annie immersed herself in the study of midwifery and completed her internship and subsequent residency in 2004.

In the following years, Annie had the opportunity to train with homebirth midwives in Colorado, Utah, and Texas. She has always felt that learning skills and styles from so many different midwives has greatly diversified and enriched her practice. Since becoming licensed in 2007, Annie has worked as a staff midwife at both Casa de Nacimiento and Maternidad la Luz, providing client care and training midwifery students. She has a passion for “midwifing the midwife” and sending skilled midwives into their communities. Annie began her private midwifery practice in 2015, and became a provider at the Retreat Maternity Center in 2016.

Annie’s experience in midwifery, and her own births to her four children, has taught her the critical importance of respectful, compassionate care. All families should have access to education and options in their pregnancy and birth care, no matter their circumstances. Annie has made true informed consent a pillar of her midwifery practice. She has had the privilege of working with families from all walks of life. She honors the power of birth, and is awed every single time she witnesses a new life enter the world. Annie has attended over 800 out-of-hospital births, and continues to serve families choosing home birth or birth at the Retreat Maternity Center.
