💊 Tuesday Tip #15: Placenta Encapsulation — Is It for You?

Some families choose placenta encapsulation as a traditional remedy to support postpartum energy, milk production, and hormonal balance.

🌀 Reported benefits (though not all are clinically proven):
• Improved mood
• Decreased fatigue
• Increased milk supply
• Emotional grounding

✨ Midwife Note:
Placenta encapsulation isn’t for everyone — we’ll help you explore pros, cons, and safe providers if you're curious.

You deserve information without judgment — that’s what true informed choice looks like.

🌸 How Home Birth Can Help You Have a Successful VBAC 💛
With Annie K***z, CPM | Attuned Midwifery Services

A VBAC is a deeply personal and empowering journey for many families. For those who have previously had a cesarean birth, the desire to experience a vaginal birth with a future pregnancy can be both exciting and daunting. That’s where home birth and midwifery care can play a vital role.

Here’s how home birth can support a successful VBAC:

✨ Personalized Care
When you choose Attuned Midwifery Services, you receive personalized care from the same midwife throughout your entire pregnancy. This allows us to build a strong relationship, understand your unique needs, and tailor your care plan to support your VBAC goals.

✨ Comfort and Autonomy
Home birth provides a calm, familiar environment, allowing you to move freely, trust your body, and labor at your own pace. This autonomy can be incredibly empowering for those seeking a VBAC. In your own space, you’re more likely to feel in control, reducing the stress and pressure that can sometimes accompany hospital settings.

✨ Lower Intervention Rates
Midwives have a strong belief in physiological birth—trusting your body’s ability to birth naturally. At home, the likelihood of unnecessary interventions (such as continuous monitoring, restrictive labor positions, or scheduled cesareans) is much lower, which can improve the chances of a successful VBAC.

✨ Continuous Support
One of the key factors in successful VBACs is continuous, uninterrupted support throughout labor. Midwives like Annie K***z, CPM, offer hands-on support, emotional reassurance, and physical comfort measures. This constant presence builds trust and helps labor progress at a natural pace.

✨ Encouragement and Respect for Your Journey
Choosing to pursue a VBAC is an act of courage and determination. At Attuned Midwifery Services, we honor your birth story and provide the encouragement and expertise you need to navigate your VBAC journey with confidence and respect.

You’ve got this. And we’re here to help you every step of the way.

🌿 Why Birth Location Matters: The Comfort of Home Birth 💛

Choosing where to give birth is one of the most personal decisions a family can make. At Attuned Midwifery Services, we understand the importance of birth location and are proud to support families who choose home birth—a choice that many find provides comfort, privacy, and safety in a way that hospital births often can't.

Why Home Birth?
For many families, home birth offers a peaceful, familiar environment where they can feel fully in control of their birth experience. Here are just a few reasons why birth location matters:

✨ Comfort and Familiarity
At home, you’re in a space where you feel most comfortable. Your own bed, your own bathroom, and a setting filled with familiar, calming elements allow you to relax and focus on your body’s natural rhythms. There’s no need to travel to a hospital or be in an unfamiliar place during such an important moment.

✨ Privacy and Control
Home birth offers a level of privacy that a hospital cannot always provide. With a midwife by your side, you have a personalized birth plan and the freedom to make decisions in a space that feels truly your own. You’re not bound by hospital routines or policies. You can eat, move, and labor in any way that feels right for you.

✨ Safety and Support
Contrary to common misconceptions, home birth is safe for low-risk pregnancies. With the right support, such as a licensed midwife, home birth provides skilled medical care in a safe, controlled environment. In the rare case of an emergency, midwives are trained to manage complications and provide quick transport to a hospital if needed.

The Bottom Line?
Your birth experience is unique to you, and we believe that home birth can provide the comfort, privacy, and safety you deserve. At Attuned Midwifery Services, we’re here to offer personalized care that respects your birth plan, whether that’s at home, a hospital, or a birth center. We’re committed to supporting your choices, so you can have the empowered birth experience you’ve always wanted.

I’m excited to share more about what’s next ✨

I’ll be joining Vida Midwifery, a group homebirth practice in Southern New Mexico that will be opening a birth center in July 2026.

I’ve known and respected these midwives for years, and I truly believe in the group practice model—it allows for more sustainable care for midwives and stronger support for families.

I’m especially excited about the beautiful birth center they are creating and the opportunity to continue serving families in this new way.

🛌 Tuesday Tip #14: The 5-5-5 Rule for Postpartum Rest

Rest is not a luxury — it’s medicine. We encourage new families to follow the 5-5-5 Rule after birth:

🕊️ 5 days in the bed
🕊️ 5 days on the bed
🕊️ 5 days near the bed

This sacred rhythm supports uterine healing, hormonal regulation, breastfeeding, and bonding — especially in those crucial early weeks.

✨ Midwife Tip:
Set up a cozy “nest” with snacks, water, and all the essentials nearby. Let others care for you while you care for baby.

👧🧒💗 We Love Getting Kids Involved in Our Care! 💗🧒👦

At Attuned Midwifery Services, we believe birth is a family journey — and that includes the littlest big siblings!

Whether they’re:

💬 Learning how to be great helpers...

We love including kids in prenatal visits and education whenever families feel comfortable.

Involving children fosters bonding, reduces fear, and helps them feel proud and connected as your family grows.

Dear Former Clients of Attuned Midwifery Services and El Paso Birth Community,

I am writing to alert you of some upcoming changes for Attuned Midwifery Services. I have accepted a position with Vida Midwifery in Las Cruces as a staff midwife.

Vida Midwifery is a group midwifery practice attending homebirths in Southern New Mexico that is opening a birth center in July 2026. I’ve known the midwives at Vida for years, and I trust and respect them. I’ve been working towards a group midwifery model for years, and it has not worked out. Therefore, this is an opportunity I am excited to accept. I believe group practice creates greater sustainability for midwives, and also better overall care for birthing families. The birth center they are building is going to be gorgeous, and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to work there.

However, it does mean that I will be slowly closing my practice at Attuned Midwifery Services. After 10 years of building this practice, I feel sad about letting it go. I have been honored to care for so many families in El Paso. I will begin working at Vida Midwifery in 2026, and will complete the care for any clients currently registered with us through the end of 2026. I will not be accepting any new clients that are due in July 2026 or later.

In the future, if you do become pregnant, I encourage you to consider giving birth at Vida Midwifery’s birth center. (www.vidamidwifery.com). If you prefer to have a home birth here in El Paso, I will be able to refer you to some of my wonderful colleagues for your care. I will be maintaining my Texas midwifery license, but my commitment to Vida Midwifery will make it unlikely that I’ll be taking any private clients for homebirths in El Paso.

I do plan on having some type of celebration as Attuned Midwifery begins to wind down. I also hit the milestone of attending 1000 births in 2025, and have been learning and practicing midwifery for 25 years. Stay tuned as plans for that celebration come to fruition! I hope that you all can come celebrate with us.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns about this transition. I will do my best to help smooth out this transition for everyone involved. I deeply appreciate your trust in me as your midwife. Working with you and your family over the years has been a deep joy.

🛁 Tuesday Tip #13: Herbal Sitz Baths for Healing

After birth, your body deserves tender, natural care — and herbal sitz baths are one of our favorite midwife-approved healing tools.

🌿 We often include blends with:
• Comfrey – promotes tissue repair
• Calendula – soothes inflammation
• Lavender – calms the nervous system
• Uva ursi – supports urinary healing

✨ Midwife Tip:
Brew like tea and pour into a shallow bath (or peri bottle!). Use warm or cool depending on your comfort.

This is more than self-care — it’s sacred recovery time.

🌿 Questions to Ask at Your Midwife Consultation
with Annie K***z, CPM | Attuned Midwifery Services

Choosing the right midwife is a crucial part of preparing for your birth experience. It’s important to find someone who aligns with your values and supports your unique birth goals. At your midwife consultation, don’t hesitate to ask questions that will help you understand if their approach fits your vision for birth.

Here are some key questions to ask during your consultation:

💛 1. What is your philosophy on birth?
Ask about their approach to pregnancy and birth—do they support natural birth, home births, or specific birth plans like water births? You want to make sure your birth philosophy aligns with theirs.

💛 2. Are you experienced with my preferred birth plan (home birth, water birth, VBAC, etc.)?
If you have a specific birth plan, like a home birth or a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean), ask about their experience and comfort level with those types of births.

💛 3. How do you handle emergencies or complications during birth?
While we hope for smooth, uncomplicated births, it’s important to know how your midwife handles emergency situations. Ask about transfer protocols, especially if you’re planning a home birth, and their experience with emergency situations.

💛 4. What kind of prenatal care do you provide?
Find out about the frequency of visits, types of tests or screenings, and the overall level of care you’ll receive. You want to make sure you feel supported and heard at each appointment.

💛 5. How do you support pain management during labor?
If pain management is a priority for you, ask about natural pain relief options (such as water birth, massage, or essential oils) and whether they support more hands-on care during labor.

✨ At Attuned Midwifery Services, we’re here to answer all of your questions and provide you with the care and support you need to have a safe, empowered birth. We believe in giving you the tools and knowledge to make the best decisions for your pregnancy and birth journey.

💛 Let us know if you’d like to schedule a consultation or if you have other questions about midwifery care. We’re here to help!

Annie K***z, CPM, LM

Midwife Annie K***z is a Certified Professional Midwife licensed in the states of Texas and New Mexico. In 2001, Annie began her journey learning the art of midwifery at Casa de Nacimiento, a busy birth center in El Paso, Texas. She witnessed her first birth only three hours after arriving at the birth center, and instantly knew birth was her calling. Annie immersed herself in the study of midwifery and completed her internship and subsequent residency in 2004.

In the following years, Annie had the opportunity to train with homebirth midwives in Colorado, Utah, and Texas. She has always felt that learning skills and styles from so many different midwives has greatly diversified and enriched her practice. Since becoming licensed in 2007, Annie has worked as a staff midwife at both Casa de Nacimiento and Maternidad la Luz, providing client care and training midwifery students. She has a passion for “midwifing the midwife” and sending skilled midwives into their communities. Annie began her private midwifery practice in 2015, and became a provider at the Retreat Maternity Center in 2016.

Annie’s experience in midwifery, and her own births to her four children, has taught her the critical importance of respectful, compassionate care. All families should have access to education and options in their pregnancy and birth care, no matter their circumstances. Annie has made true informed consent a pillar of her midwifery practice. She has had the privilege of working with families from all walks of life. She honors the power of birth, and is awed every single time she witnesses a new life enter the world. Annie has attended over 800 out-of-hospital births, and continues to serve families choosing home birth or birth at the Retreat Maternity Center.
