S was admitted to the hospital due to severe anxiety and panic attacks. Once a teacher who loved singing and playing instruments with her students, she grew overwhelmed by music as her mental health declined. Even the thought of music triggered distress.

Thanks to the music therapy program at the McNair Inpatient Psychiatric Unit at Kelowna General Hospital with support of Music Heals funding, S received one-on-one music therapy sessions, as group settings weren’t suitable for her at the time. The music therapist focused on building trust and creating a safe space, combining music with mindfulness to support S’s well-being.

Music Therapy began gently, with vocal humming and mindfulness. As her tolerance grew, the Kalimba was introduced. At first hesitant, S eventually played it, smiling as she did, reclaiming a long-lost part of herself.

Using her voice and the Kalimba became a healing bridge back for S and her relationship with music. Before discharge, S expressed heartfelt gratitude for the chance to reconnect with something that once brought her joy. Thanks to music therapy, she found a safe, meaningful path back to music.

Music therapy interventions can be classified into two categories: Expressive and Receptive interventions, expressive being the act of creating music actively through gross and fine motor movements or vocalizing. Receptive could be understood as a more passive interaction, such as music assisted relaxation, music and guided breathing exercises, etc. Here is an example of expressive intervention: live music recreation, our job as music therapists includes making music making accessible to EVERYONE. A common misconception is that someone needs to have musical skills to receive music therapy, not true at all. We ADAPT instruments, big and small, to make it accessible for all populations, all abilities. Our job also includes creating a clinically safe and conducive improvisational space for a person to express themselves without fear of “wrong notes” or discordant feedback ! What’s the difference between a musician and a music therapist? Well there’s a lovely chart I made to show you just that! The similarities? Both are trained in music performance, improvisation, music theory! The main differences? Music therapists MUST complete a dedicated bachelors or masters program in SPECIFICALLY music therapy. They must attend clinical training during their education at a site with a music therapist, they must take psychology courses as well as basic to intermediate anatomy and medical terminology courses and MUST demonstrate proficiency in vocals, piano, and guitar aside from their primary instruments in order to graduate! THEN the student must do a 6 month full time internship with a board certified music therapist! AND THEN they can sit for the national certification exam for music therapists. It’s a long and arduous journey, but a necessary one that prepares a music therapist for their journey in changing lives through music with evidence based treatments! Did you know that there are less than 10 board certified music therapists practicing actively in the El Paso/ Las Cruces area?? The borderland has a high demand for music therapy services, consider pursuing the career! Follow our Instagram for regular posts and info about the services we offer and music therapy info!

Music therapy is the clinical evidence based use of music as a therapeutic medium to reach each patients tailored goals and objectives! Whether that means strengthening, communication skills, both receptive and expressive, in increasing fine motor skills through adapted instrument playing and lessons, or gross motor skills through dance coordination. Music is a safe non-pharmacological intervention and means for those with disabilities to express themselves! Music activates all parts of the brain at once, the expectation of what’s to come with familiar and preferred music helps in not only measuring success of tasks performed, but creating expectations of things to come as well! What can music therapy do for you and your loved ones when provided by a board certified music therapist? Inquire with us today about starting music therapy services!
