Challenging behavior is often a form of communication. When a child doesn’t yet have the words or skills to express their needs, their behavior may be the way they show frustration, seek attention, escape a difficult task, or request something they want. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) focuses on understanding the “why” behind a behavior by carefully observing what happens before and after it occurs. By identifying the function of the behavior, our ABA therapists can teach more effective and appropriate ways for children to communicate their needs, build important life skills, and reduce behaviors that may interfere with learning or daily life. 💙

So grateful for an incredible day in our community! 💙

At Behavior Frontiers, we’re excited to share a photo recap from our recent resource fair. The Family Center of Grosse Pointe and Harper Woods 4th Annual Special Needs Resource Fair is an event created to connect parents and caregivers with valuable tools, services, and support for their children with autism.

From local providers and therapy resources to educational materials and community connections, the fair was all about empowering families with information and reminding them they’re never alone on this journey.

Thank you to everyone who attended, participated, and helped make this event such a meaningful experience. Together, we build stronger support systems for children with autism and the families who love them. 💙

5 Sensory-Friendly Toys We Love for Children with Autism

1. Lakeshore Learning Soft & Safe Sensory Shapes

2. Lakeshore Learning Watch It Roll Calming Tube
A simple but highly engaging calming tube that kids can roll back and forth. Watching movement can help with visual focus and self-soothing, making it a nice choice for moments when children need a sensory break.

3. Tangle Creations BrainTools™ Fidget Toy
A flexible, twistable toy offering continuous motion and tactile feedback - perfect for fidgeting, reducing anxiety, and improving concentration. Fidget-style toys like this are often well-liked by kids with autism because they let hands stay busy in a calming way.

4. Sensory Playtivity™ Hidden Stuff Sensory Discs
Captivating, soothing tactile and visual sensory experiences for early learners or those with special needs are delivered with these 5" diameter Sensory Discs. Also perfect for fidgety students, these discs are made for touching, squeezing, exploring and observing!

5. Calming Stretchy Band Fidget Toy by Bouncy Bands
Calming, silent and satisfying sensory toy reduces stress and anxiety and increases focus in school, home and just about anywhere. Perfect for home or school, the therapeutic relief when stretching the band is beneficial to all children who need to decompress and relax.

🧠 Tips for Choosing Sensory Toys
- Match to sensory needs: Some kids prefer tactile (touch), others visual or auditory input - noticing what your child enjoys helps you pick the best toy.

- Use for regulation: Sensory toys can help with self-soothing during transitions, anxiety, or overstimulation.

- Safety first: Always check age recommendations and avoid small parts for younger children.

At Behavior Frontiers, we have a collection of sensory-friendly toys at our ABA centers designed with your child in mind for play and learning alike. Enroll today!

How Does ABA Therapy Work?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a science-based approach to helping children with autism build meaningful skills that last.

ABA therapy:
• Breaks skills into small, teachable steps
• Uses positive reinforcement to encourage learning
• Utilizes data to guide therapy decisions
• Teaches communication, social, daily living, independence, and emotional regulation skills to support long-term development

At Behavior Frontiers, our programs are guided by expert clinicians and data-informed care. Learn more at behaviorfrontiers.com! 💙
