Betty Mobley Cox, age 92, of Carlyle Place, Macon, Georgia, formerly of Elba, Alabama passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2025. The daughter of the late Charles Gordon Mobley Sr and Mary Helen Mobley, Betty grew up on a family farm in the Barnes Community, Alabama where she witnessed the addition of electricity and indoor plumbing into her childhood home. Her early education was conducted in a one-room schoolhouse, Barnes School which later became Union School. While in high school, Betty was a cheerleader and Miss Abbeville, in Abbeville, AL (12 miles from the family farm). In her early years she attended Haleburg Methodist Church. While in high school she attended Abbeville Methodist Church, which was the church where she was married. Betty attended Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL for two years then transferred to and graduated from The University of Alabama in 1954 where she was a member of Chi Omega Fraternity. While attending Alabama, Betty met and married Walter W Cox. After graduation, Walter was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force and served as a pilot for four years.
In 1959, Mr. and Mrs. Cox moved to Elba, AL to raise their three young children and to grow their family. It was Elba, AL where Walt and Betty purchased and established the Elba Western Auto Store. Betty worked alongside Walt in the Western Auto for 37 years until they sold the business in 1997. In her spare time, Betty was a Master Gardener and helped establish the Azalea Garden Club where she served in many capacities which included Club President. Additionally, she was active in The Elba United Methodist Church where she served as a trustee on the Administrative Board and taught Sunday School for many years. As a faithful member of Elba United Methodist Church, Betty set an excellent example for her children and ensured they were in church when the doors were open. Additionally, as a dedicated mother to her children she provided them with every opportunity to pursue their personal interest. She was tremendously dedicated to all her activities; however, she was particularly attentive to their son, Steve, who had multiple disabilities. As a testimony to Betty’s dedication to her family, she moved them to Birmingham for Steve to attend a school for the deaf. She will be remembered for her deep devotion to Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, her fierce determination in everything she pursued and her outreach to the community. Betty was an excellent role model to her children and grandchildren. Her advice to them always included, “Love God and keep his commandments, seek to do His will, which will in turn keep your priorities in order. Know there is no easy ride in life and hard work does payoff.”
Betty was also active in the Coffee County Arts Alliance and the South-Central Alabama Girl Scout Council. She loved watching the Crimson Tide play football, as well as dancing with Walt in the Enterprise Dance Club once a month. Walt and Betty also enjoyed traveling the world and spending many memorable days at their beach house, 7Cs, in Sunnyside Beach, FL.
In 2010, Walt and Betty moved to Carlyle Place in Macon, GA to be close to their children and grandchildren.
