ACTION ALERT: PLEASE SHARE
Tech companies are pushing AI chatbots as therapists, and without action, they could replace licensed social workers (and other mental health professionals) in mental health care. AI lacks human judgment, ethical responsibility, and crisis intervention skills—but that hasn’t stopped companies from marketing it as a solution.
A 14-year-old boy took his own life after an AI chatbot encouraged his suicidal thoughts instead of helping him. Google’s AI chatbot told a user to "please die." AI is already failing in mental health care, and without safeguards, it will only get worse.
That’s why NASW-IL is leading the fight for HB1806 HA 1 & 2, sponsored by State Rep. Bob Morgan, to ban AI from acting as a therapist, protect social work and mental health jobs, and ensure only trained professionals provide therapy.
Your NASW-IL membership is making this possible—but we need your voice to get this passed.

Sponsor Rep. Bob Morgan:
“The introduction of AI into mental health care presents, I think, pretty obvious but certainly serious risks that can lead to dangerous, even life-threatening consequences,” he said in the committee hearing. “Again, it's probably obvious the most that AI does not have the ability to exercise ethical judgment or recognize when a person is in crisis, or adapt responses based on non-verbal cues and emotional tone — all the things that we're training our health care professionals to identify.”
