Sometimes we feel like we are trapped, as though we have no options. But, truly, the only thing any of us is required to do at any moment is breathe. When you don't know what to do, when you don't know what to say, breathe. It will come to you. Every breath you take affects how you move. Here’s how to fix both

Dysfunctional breathing patterns are at the root of many postural issues, core imbalances and chronic tension. Here’s how to assess and improve your breathing.

You're not too old. It's not too late. Look for your inspiration. Want to keep up with the grandkids, challenge your children to a balance contest, or sit on the floor (and get back up)? Just start now and work with your body as it is.

Michael Pollan's Rule #3: Not Too Much... food, that is. Many of our modern health problems stem from overnutrition. Caloric restriction has many health benefits. The fasting mimicking diet (FMD) stands out from other caloric restriction plans for a wide variety of health benefits including cellular renewal. lowering blood pressure, and slowing cognitive decline. Evidence suggests that FMD can be used to treat metabolic and autoimmune disease. It may also lower risk of cancer and contribute to longevity. Below is a link to a chart comparing different caloric restriction practices. You don't have to starve. The simplest practice is practicing a daily 12 hour fast. Limit yourself to having only water or tea between dinner and bedtime then wait an hour or two after waking to have your first meal. It's simple, it gives your stomach a rest, and it can lower your body fat to lean mass ratio.

I'm starting to catch up on posts about class handouts. One of the first handouts I like to give to students includes information about the Blue Zones. These are areas around the world with high per capita centenarians, i.e. people who live to and past 100. Scientists have found correlations in diet and lifestyle among these diverse regions. Salt and I took a Blue Zone tour in March traveling to an area of Sardinia where we took a cooking class and learned more about their lifestyle, but interestingly there is one Blue Zone you can visit in the United States among the Seventh Day Adventist community in Loma Linda, California. This article shares those the key traits that Blue Zone communities have in common. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/blue-zones You can also learn more at the webpage bluezones.com, where they provide information and resources on how to develop community Blue Zone programs.

“Blue Zones" are areas in which people have low rates of disease and live longer than anywhere else. Here are their inhabitants' common lifestyle features.

Yoga Every Day! The woman in this video is taking steps to avoid deep vein thrombosis resulting from sitting for an extended period of time. She has extra space to move in business class. If you are in coach class, wear compression socks and be sure to get up and walk around periodically. Maybe try some toe touches and torso twists while you are standing in the spacious area outside the airplane lavatory. Also, did you know that airlines instruct passengers to ask attendants to reach for cell phones that have been dropped beneath the seats? I don't know their reason for this rule, but I do know that with airplane seats so tightly packed it takes an extremely flexible and small person to perform such a feat. I've done the full body dive looking for a cell phone on a plane, when my travel companion couldn't. It took strength, flexibility, and mental commitment to get that phone. That's an unusual situation, but ask yourself this question, "If I dropped my TV remote under the sofa, how difficult would it be for me to retrieve it and get back up off the floor?" While in Sardinia on our Blue Zone tour, we found this 1958 beer advertisement in a flea market. Translation: "Who drinks beer, drinks health. For over 50 centuries the entire world knows, appreciates, and drinks beer. Drink beer. Who drinks beer lives 100 years." Well there's a promise. The truth is that drinking a little beer won't hurt, but it's probably not the fountain of youth advertised. :D

Yesterday, we took a Blue Zone tour to Aritzo in Sardinia where we made bread and pasta with Vittoria. Salt talked to Franzesca about her bees and honey. Francesco prepared his prosciutto and pecorino to go along with a little wild boar, chard omelet, and wild asparagus to complete our lunch. We also learned about wood carving from Carlo. It was a great way to meet artisans and makers in this beautiful community. As of this week they have 104 centenarians in their Blue Zone. Today we had a slow, two hour lunch at Is Femminas in Cagliari where they are bringing the Blue Zone style of eating to the city. To be clear, diet is an important part of the health span and life span, but there are other factors too. Remaining physically active and involved in your community with a sense of purpose are also important.
