The Urban League of Union County extends our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the life lost in Saturday's tragic shooting in Union Township, and we are keeping all those injured in our thoughts as they recover.

To the first responders who answered the call that night — thank you. Your courage, your sacrifice, and your commitment to keeping our communities safe do not go unnoticed. Every day, you put your lives on the line to protect and serve, and for that, we are deeply thankful.

In moments like this, we are reminded of the importance of community, compassion, and care for one another.

Our Annual Black Children’s Book Week event at the Hillside Recreation Center brought together families for an afternoon centered on creativity, storytelling, and inspiration.

Children and their parents joined us to explore what it means to be the author of their own story. We were honored to hear from Veronica Chapman, Founder of Black Children’s Book Week, Al Hardy, Union County Commissioner Stanley Neron, and ULUC President & CEO Crystal Orr, who each poured into the next generation with encouragement and purpose.

Local authors JRead, Arayna Kemp, and Moses Eche read their stories, and with the support of librarian Christal Blue, each child created and shared their own book. From dinosaurs to Rosa Parks to stories about their families, their creativity filled the room.

Each child also received books to take home, courtesy of Karla Alvarez from the Rahway Library.

Thank you to DJMPure for setting the tone and Malaika of Captured Canvas for capturing the moments. This was a meaningful reminder of what happens when young voices are given space to be heard.

Some women don’t just lead. They build legacies that communities stand on for generations.

In Union County, that legacy belongs to Ella S. Teal. 🩷

For 38 years, Mrs. Teal led the Urban League of Union County as President and CEO. Through her leadership, the organization grew into a nationally recognized affiliate- providing employment support, housing counseling, youth programming, reentry services, and safe spaces for some of our most vulnerable residents.

Her work touched every corner of the community. From supporting families and young people to building programs that changed lives, her impact is still felt today.

With degrees in sociology, psychology, and social work, and executive training from institutions like Harvard, Duke, and IBM, she brought both heart and strategy to the work.

And the recognition followed: Living Legend. Woman of the Year. Humanitarian. One of New Jersey’s most influential leaders.

Before Women’s History Month comes to a close, we honor one of our sheroes.

Because of her, we are stronger. Because of her, we continue the work.

What has ULUC been up to?

Earlier this month, our Reentry Team was on the ground at the 2026 Law Enforcement Recruitment Fair at Kean University, connecting directly with agencies, partners, and opportunities that matter for our community.

This work is intentional. Every conversation, every connection, and every resource shared is part of a larger effort to ensure returning citizens have real pathways to stability, employment, and long-term success.

Our reentry services at the Urban League of Union County are designed to meet people where they are. From workforce development and job readiness to supportive services and guidance, we are committed to helping individuals navigate one of the most pivotal transitions in their lives with dignity and direction.

And we are not stopping here. We will be hosting another reentry-focused event later this year. Stay connected with us for details.

If you or someone you know is returning home and needs support, we encourage you to reach out. You do not have to navigate this alone. We are here for you.

So what was the real impact of last week’s National Urban League Empowerment Summit and Legislative Policy Conference?

Day to day, our work is rooted in our local communities. That’s where we show up.

But this space reminded us how connected that work really is.

We had the opportunity to engage directly with leaders like Cory Booker and LaMonica McIver, making sure our communities are represented at every level.

We celebrated affiliates and auxiliaries making powerful moves. We stepped into new spaces, including a visit to Amazon headquarters. And we leaned into the in-between moments—the real conversations, the collaboration, the support, and the listening that remind us we’re not doing this work alone.

In times like these, that matters.

We’re grateful for our time in Washington, D.C., especially alongside the CEO Summit, and we’re already looking ahead to Nashville.

But for now, we return home renewed.

Spring is a season of renewal, and we’re recommitting to our community as we prepare for our upcoming annual membership meeting.

Make sure you’re tapped into our newsletter to stay connected to what’s next.

Opportunity grows when communities come together.

The Urban League of Union County was proud to host our Workforce Job and Resource Fair, bringing together employers, training programs, and community organizations committed to helping Union County residents move forward in their careers and their lives.

Throughout the event, job seekers were able to connect directly with employers who are hiring, explore workforce training programs, and access resources related to housing, financial literacy, and other support services that help create stability and long-term opportunity.

This is part of the work we do every day. The Urban League of Union County continues to create spaces where residents can access opportunity, build skills, and connect with the people and organizations that help strengthen our community.

We are thankful to the employers, partners, and community organizations from across Union County and beyond who showed up to share resources, offer jobs, and invest in the people who make this community strong.

If you are looking for ways to partner with us, bring resources to residents, or support programs that strengthen Union County, we invite you to learn more at uloucnj.org.
