When a client experiences shame, they live in constant fear of being rejected. And they become trapped in the avoidance strategies they create to escape the pain.

When something traumatic happens, the brain has one goal: survival. Whether the threat is physical, emotional, or psychological, the body reacts automatically—activating a trauma responses.

The four most common trauma responses are:

1️⃣ Fight: The body responds by attempting to fight back against its attacker, whether it be physical or verbal. This might look like yelling, hitting, or resisting the threat.

2️⃣ Flight: The body responds by attempting to run away from its attacker or escape the conflict. That could mean physically leaving or emotionally disconnecting to protect yourself.

3️⃣ Freeze: The body responds by becoming immobile, waiting for danger to pass. This allows for disassociation of the traumatic event or pain. You may feel paralyzed, numb, or unable to speak or move.

4️⃣ Fawn: The body responds by prioritizing the needs of the attacker to avoid conflict. This is more common when the attacker is someone you know or trust.

These responses are not choices. They are deeply wired, involuntary instincts—the body’s way of protecting us from harm.

One person might fight. Another might freeze. The same person might respond differently in two different situations.

None of these responses mean you allowed the trauma to happen.
None of them mean it’s your fault.

If you're struggling to make sense of your trauma response or want support in your healing, we’re here. 💙 Our Crisis & Support line is available 24/7 by calling (270) 234-9236.
