Red Flag Warnings alert fire managers on federal lands to conditions that are highly unfavorable for prescribed burns and that may lead to especially dangerous wildfire growth.
-
To issue a Red Flag Warning, we need the following:
-
1) DRY FUELS:
Ten-hour fuels of 8% or less. This parameter describes how much water is held by small vegetation such as grass, leaves, and mulch that take only about ten hours to respond to changes in dry/wet conditions.
-
2) LOW HUMIDITY:
When the air is dry, usually with relative humidity (RH) levels below 25%, it increases the likelihood that any spark or small fire can ignite surrounding vegetation
-
3) HIGH WINDS:
Sustained winds of 15 mph or higher, with gusts exceeding 25 mph, can rapidly fan flames, pushing a fire across a large area quickly.
-
According to the National Weather Service, Red Flag Warnings are usually only issued during the spring and fall fire weather seasons, February 15 – April 30 and October 1 - December 15. In Southern California, however, Red Flag Warning season can extend throughout the calendar year.
-
When warnings are issued, officials know how to curtail planned burns and how to be on the lookout for wildfires.
