How can you prevent eye injuries while playing sports?

There are multiple options for protecting your eyes while playing sports. Some of them include… Safety goggles, helmets, and face shields.

Please remember that your regular eyeglasses are not enough protection! If you are interested in prescription eyewear, don’t hesitate to ask one of us at your next annual eye exam.

Fun fact:
Prolonged use of screens (computers, tablets, tv’s, ipads, phones…etc) causes a decreased blink rate.

Why is this important?
You may be contributing to your dry eye symptoms!

Your tears are made up of 3 layers- mucous, water, and oil. The oil layer keeps the water layer on the surface of the eye, keeping your eye hydrated. The oil layer of your tears comes from a gland in your eyelid that is secreted with each blink. So decreasing your blinking, decreases the amount of oil being released into the tears. If the oil layer is not present or not as stable as it should be, your tears are not going to sit on the surface of your eyes as long as they should, which causes dryness.

This Friday begins our sports eye safety month posts. This month will be an opportunity for us to share with our patients and their families about the importance of sport eye safety/protection. Each sport and activity has their own risk for eye injury. So we have to be sure to protect our eyes!

We will be sharing different forms of eye protection and possible injuries that can occur while being active out on the field, court, mat, or whatever sports arena you participate in. Stay tuned for more information.

Meet the Machines!!

The visual field machine maps a patients’ peripheral vision.

How is this done?
While you are staring straight ahead, there are stimuli that are being introduced that you respond to (via clicking the button) to test how sensitive each portion of your peripheral vision is. And after the test is complete we are presented with a pattern/map of dots and/or numbers that serves as a visual representation of your visual system.

If there is any vision loss, it can be detected with this test. Conditions such as glaucoma, pituitary tumors, optic neuropathies, and even strokes can be detected. But It is always conducted at each exam, to ensure your peripheral vision is monitored annually.

There are two forms of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD), dry and wet.

Dry ARMD is the most common form of the two and is the result of the thinning of macula, in addition to the formation and growth of protein deposits, called drusen, in the macula. While the drusen cannot be treated, once the thinning of the macula has reached a certain point, that can be treated.

Wet ARMD is the rarest form of ARMD, but is more dangerous because it causes the loss of vision much faster. Wet ARMD is classified as such when new and abnormal blood vessels leak into the macula, causing scarring and the imminent loss of function. Wet ARMD can be treated by the injection of a medication that works to stop the new blood vessels from growing and leaking.

Both kinds of ARMD can be monitored with annual eye exams and at home (after an eye exam) with an Amsler Grid.

It’s Friday, so it’s time for our weekly Black History Month Optometry/Eye-Related fact!

You hear us emphasize eye protection quite often. But did you know that Johnson Powell received a patent for an “Eye-Protector” he invented and designed. These eye protectors were meant to be used by furnace men, iron manufacturing workers, firemen, and any workers that are exposed to prolonged glare and strong lights. While these glasses weren’t protective from impact, they did help with bright lights and glare and also helped protect the wearer from some of the heat emitted from the light source.

Thank you Johnson Powell for inventing the first known functional protective eyewear.

Ever think about what your glasses are made of? Surprisingly they aren’t made of glass.

Lens materials include different forms/types of plastics, which differ in terms of clarity, durability, thickness, and UV protection.

Please keep in mind the plastic options can be used in general eye glasses and/or sunglasses!

Explore the best option for you, by asking your optician at your next exam!
