ASK THE DOCTOR:
Q. Should I use heat or ice for my pain?
A. Ice is recommended for the first 72 hours after an injury because it helps reduce swelling, which causes pain. Just make sure to place a layer of cloth between your skin and the ice pack.
Heat has the opposite effect and causes small blood vessels to open which can increase inflammation. Heat is better for chronic conditions caused from old injuries or arthritis as it can relax the surrounding muscles and tissue. However, neither option should be used for more than 10 to 15 minutes at a time.
