Julie Motycka, MD - Beacon Medical Group Obstetrics and Gynecology Elkhart Meet Dr. Julie Motycka. I want them to know that I really do care about them and their well-being.”

In 1990, while working as a pharmaceutical chemist for Baxter Healthcare, and as a pharmacy tech for Walgreens, she decided she wanted to become a physician. “I applied and was accepted into medical school. I was 27 at the time.”

While she doesn’t come from a long line of doctors, Julie did have two maternal uncles who were family practitioners. “I chose the OB/GYN path because I wanted to help g

uide women through their reproductive lives – particularly pregnancy and childbirth.”

Dr. Motycka chose to practice at Beacon because she believes the culture is a good fit with her own philosophy. “I am my patient’s biggest advocate,” she says. “I always try to encourage them to stay positive and take things one step at a time.

Caring for women from puberty to death, Jo Anna’s philosophy as a provider is to follow the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” She says, “I try very hard to meet all my patients where they are and spend as much time with them as they need during a visit to help them make informed decisions about their own health.”

Walking is a simple, low cost and accessible way to exercise. What you might not know about walking is how pace matters, especially as we age.

Increasing your regular pace can lower your risks of certain diseases and conditions from heart rhythm abnormalities to back pain, according to recent studies.

"Adjusting how fast you walk is beneficial for your heart, muscles and joints," says Monica Chiddister, physical therapist with Beacon Physical Therapy and Memorial Outpatient Therapy Services.

Beacon hospitals nationally recognized for high-quality stroke care

Stroke patients who receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines, are more likely to survive a stroke and have minimized long-term effects.

Three Beacon hospitals -- Beacon Kalamazoo, Elkhart General Hospital, and Memorial Hospital of South Bend -- received the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke Gold Plus award. This award recognizes proven dedication to ensuring all stroke patients have access to best practices and lifesaving care.

Award recipients:
• Demonstrate commitment to quality stroke care
• Follow AHA treatment guidelines
• Educate stroke patients for their health and recovery

"I knew I wanted to breastfeed as soon as I found out I was pregnant," says Tia Kling, a registered nurse at Elkhart General Hospital and mom of three. But even for someone who helps other moms breastfeed, the journey wasn't always easy.

During National Breastfeeding Month, we're reminded that while only 1 in 4 infants receive breastmilk exclusively, every journey is different and support makes all the difference. "There's a growth curve with each child, and that is the bonding that we talk about with breastfeeding," Tia said in this month's WSBT Eye on Health.

Beacon's Baby-Friendly designated hospitals, Elkhart General Hospital, Memorial Hospital and Beacon Kalamazoo, provide immediate skin-to-skin contact after delivery, expert lactation consultants and personalized education during your stay. After discharge, our lactation consultants offer follow-up phone consultations, support groups and outpatient appointments.

"Any amount is going to be helpful for both mom and baby. We're here to support people in whatever their goals and plans are," says Michelle Kaufman, certified nurse midwife at Elkhart General Hospital. Hear more from Michelle and Tia: https://bit.ly/3JcSyku

Ever wonder what an interventional radiologist does? It’s a lot — and you might meet with one someday to improve your health. Here’s what to know about these experts:

Their treatments are minimally invasive – meaning they perform procedures through small cuts or using small tubes instead of large surgical incisions.

Their work is image guided – they use real-time imaging to guide tools inside the body.

They treat a wide variety of conditions – many of which we list in the graphics above!

They can diagnose and treat issues – You might see them more than once.

Bob McGrew thought his days of walking 18 holes were numbered. After decades of knee pain from an old football injury, the Granger retiree was struggling just to climb stairs. The pain eventually affected both knees and his back.

A recommendation led him to Dr. Gregg Ebersole at Beacon Bone & Joint Specialists, where an outpatient knee replacement would change everything. "Over the years Bob had worn down the cartilage on his knees," Dr. Ebersole said. "Once Bob had exhausted conservative management and noticed a decrease in his quality of life, it was time to proceed with surgery."

What surprised Bob most wasn't just the minimal pain, but the exceptional care throughout his recovery. "It was just unbelievable how little pain I experienced and how quickly I regained my mobility," he said. "Had I known how simple this process was going to be, I would have done one or both knees a long time ago."

Today, Bob is back to walking long distances and playing 18 holes pain-free. Read more about how the Beacon team changed his life: https://bit.ly/3UoAS7W

“I thought this would be the year I could really show what I could do on the court,” said Gabe, a Washington High School basketball player who experienced four injuries that threatened his blossoming sports career.

It all began with a fractured lower tibia, followed by swelling and clicking in his knee and then additional challenges. But Gabe never quit as he faced surgery and physical therapy with Beacon Bone & Joint Specialists and Beacon Athletic Trainers and he worked hard to get back in the game.

Neurosurgeon Wei Huff hears a common question about brain surgery: “Will it change my personality, memory or brain function?” Dr. Huff says it depends on the type of surgery and location, but “the majority of the time, our goal is to have you at the same baseline after surgery. We are trained to gently handle delicate tissue and protect brain and spine.” That’s because Beacon neurosurgeons protect healthy brain tissue by using:
•Real-time imaging guidance
•Minimally invasive and microsurgery techniques
•Monitoring of brain functions during surgery
You can count on your Beacon neurosurgeon to have a thorough discussion with you about the risks so you know what to expect. Learn more about neurosurgery or schedule at appointment at: https://bit.ly/41wKEIM
