2026 is the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. Over the next 250 days we will be highlighting historic people, places or things from around Walworth County.

Up next is Badger High School.

How did Lake Geneva’s Badger High School get its name?

When Lake Geneva High School and Genoa City High School merged in 1958, administrators at the school thought the best thing to do in order to determine a new name for the school was to let the students vote.

The proposed names on the ballot were Park High School, Lake City High School, La Follette High School, Park View High School, and, of course, Badger High School.

According to school legend, a group of senior football players formed a plan to convince the Class of 1958 to vote for the “dumbest” name, since they would no longer be attending the school. Enough of the senior class voted for Badger High School, and the name was submitted to the district board for formal acceptance!
