1 John 4:20-21
20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
21 And this commandment have we from him, that he who loveth God love his brother also.

This morning, Nancy called this scripture to my attention.
Just because we profess with our mouth that we are Christians doesn’t make us Christians. The term Christian means to be Christ like in our actions, the way we live and the way we love.

We live in a day when a lot of people think you can identify as a woman when you are in fact a man, or a cat when in fact you are a child.

This ridiculous way of thinking applies to labeling oneself as a Christian and not loving your fellow man.

Jesus sits the example by loving us when we were yet sinners. And Jesus instructs us time and time again through God’s word that we are to do likewise.

We should ask ourselves, “Am I a liar?” “Do I truly love, like Jesus loved?” “Are my actions towards others Christ like?”
Or am I religious like the Priest and the Levite who left a wounded man dying in a ditch?

I was recently reminded of the stigma related to those suffering from the disease of Substance Abuse Disorder. As a minister and one in recovery from addiction for 34 years I really thought we had come along way from the idea that folks with this disease were like people who had leprosy back in Jesus’s day. I was reminded of a story in God’s Word, where a lawyer asked Jesus in Luke chapter 10, “Who is my neighbor”? Jesus responded with a parable of the good Samaritan, who showed mercy and compassion to a man he knew nothing about. The Samaritan didn’t know this man’s background or history, if he was a good man or a bad man. All he knew was this man was in need of help, so he helped him. Jesus teaches that a neighbor is anyone who crosses our path in this life. Jesus commands us to love our neighbor as ourselves. As we approach this time of giving and celebrating the gift that God gave us and the love and compassion, He extended to us while we were yet sinners, let us be good neighbors to others who are in the valley trying to find their way out.
