David D. Leatherman Sr., age 74, of Woodleaf, N.C., went to rest on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at Davis Regional Medical Center in Statesville, N.C.
Dave was born on October 12, 1946, in Woodleaf, NC to the late Guy and Sarah Reep Leatherman. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers; G.S. “Bud” Leatherman and Paul Leatherman, four sisters; Hellen, Nell, Bonnie and Willie.
He loved the Lord and was baptized at a young age. He also joined the United States Airforce in 1965 and served his country till 1972, he was a Crew Chief on a B52 bombers.
He owned a drywall business for over thirty years, and loved to play and listen to Traditional Bluegrass music. In 1977, Dave was third nominee for Best Male Vocalist, 1978 and 1979, he won Bluegrass music award SPBGMA, Best Male Vocalist (Traditional) also in 1979 Best Album Recording, Fourth Nominee for Southern Traditional, 1981 and 1982, Best Male Vocalist Traditional Fourth nominee, World Champs,Tri-County Bluegrass Boys, noted for their outstanding performance at the “Old Time Fiddlers Convention. The musical group received recognition as the World Champion Bluegrass Band from among three hundred entries before an audience of 75,000 fans.
He is survived by his loving wife Ivadene Lawson Leatherman, two sons, David Leatherman Jr., Bobby Leatherman, all of Woodleaf, NC, daughter, Paula Leatherman of Traphill, NC, grandchildren; Chelsea Leatherman, Michael Leatherman, Brittany Rackley, Abigail Leatherman and Bradley Brock, two great-grandchildren; Lilyanna and Hunter, sister, Annie Mayfield of Flemming Island, FL, brother, Evan Dean Leatherman of Hollywood, FL, also several friends and relatives.
A Graveside Service will be held, 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 15, 2021 at Billings Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Leatherman will lie-in-state on Friday, May 14, 2021 from 10:00-5:00 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home of Elkin.
