What do you see when you see this picture?
💜
We see generational curses that need to be broken!
♥️
Our behavior determines our self-worth because what we ‘Be’ is what we ‘Have.’
💛
We must teach our children love not hate. Teach them how to be compassionate, caring and understanding in this world.

This is how we produce change!!!

For the month of BIPOC Mental Health Awareness, I will be posting nonprofits who are BIPOC and competent in providing resources for those who are marginalized and underrepresented due to stigma and bias.
💚
The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded in 2018 by Taraji P. Henson and led by Executive Director, Tracie Jade Jenkins. The foundation is named in honor of Ms. Henson’s father, Boris Lawrence Henson, who suffered with mental health challenges as a result of his tour of duty in the Vietnam War. We are committed to changing the perception of mental illness in the African-American community by encouraging those who suffer with this debilitating illness to get the help they need.
🧡
One in five Americans suffer from mental illness. African-Americans are the least likely population to seek treatment. We were taught to hold our problems close to the vest out of fear of being labeled and further demonized as inapt, weak, and/or inadequate. African-Americans also have a history of being misdiagnosed, so there is mistrust associated with therapy.
💜
Through our partnerships, the foundation will ensure cultural competency in caring for African Americans who struggle with mental illness by providing scholarships to African-American students who seek a career in the mental health field; offer mental health services and programs to young people in urban schools; and combat recidivism within the prison system.
♥️
We support organizations who educate, celebrate, and make visible the positive impact of mental health wellness.

Most blacks women are not taught how to live themselves and the focus of love goes towards the children and men.
💜
Black men were not taught love as much either but instead the focus was on being strong and a provider.
🧡
Unfortunately for both, it has been detrimental towards their growth.
♥️
When we understand how self-love can change us as individuals and how this will lead to an understanding of how we view not only ourselves, the people around us and the world……Peace will be yours.

Emotions are defined as something that causes a reaction.
💚
As humans we are emotional creatures but how you were taught to handle your emotions will determine your mental state.
🖤
Unfortunately for most of the BIPOC community they were taught to react and as a result to that, their mental health is challenged more often than others.
💙
Here are some tips that you can use when someone’s action provokes an emotion.

Although mental health disorders appear to affect various racial groups at similar rates, the vast majority of mental health treatment providers in the United States are White.
💜
To combat the historic mistreatment and provide the needed mental health services, we need more professionals that look like the communities. African Americans make up 13 percent of the U.S. population. Yet of the estimated 41,000 psychiatrists in the country, only two percent are Black, according to the American Psychiatric Association.
💛
The lack of diversity creates misunderstanding between providers and those seeking treatment. Additionally, without similar, relevant lived-experiences, providers who are not part of the BIPOC community might underestimate the effects that racism and discrimination play on a person’s mental health, potentially leading to a diminished quality of treatment.
💙
For this reason, we created Mentally Fit 4 Life, Inc. because we understand not only the lack of access but also the stigma that prevents treatment.
💚
During BIPOC MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH, we will push the agenda of “You are Not Alone.”
♥️
Please support us as we help the community become Mentally Fit 4 Life.

Suffering in anything can be challenging but it is the suffering that allows us to pause and think. In the pause, we can actually think and question our pain and look for the reason and that is how we grow.

FAILING can be painful and detrimental to many, but it should be an experience of growth and lessons. It should not define you and you should never identify with the term FAILURE. Look at what you failed at, face it head on, deal with it, and learn from it.
