April is Autism Awareness Month 💙

At our practice, we’re taking time to increase understanding, compassion, and support for individuals on the autism spectrum.

Autism looks different for everyone. It can impact communication, social interaction, sensory processing, and more—but it also comes with unique strengths, perspectives, and ways of experiencing the world.

As speech-language pathologists, we’re here to:
💙 Support communication in all its forms
💙 Help individuals build meaningful connections
💙 Empower families with tools and education
💙 Promote understanding within our community

Awareness is the first step toward inclusion. The more we learn, the better we can support and uplift autistic individuals in ways that respect who they are.

Speech practice doesn’t need to feel like homework. 🙅‍♀️

Try this instead:
🎲 Board games (practice target words each turn)
🚗 Car rides (“I spy something with S…”)
📖 Books (repeat fun words together)

Short + playful = more progress

Consistency beats perfection. 💬✨

If your child has multiple sound errors…

Start with ONE.

Not five. Not all of them. ONE 👇

Why?
Because success builds momentum.

Mastering one sound:
✨ Builds confidence
✨ Improves clarity
✨ Makes the next sound easier

Small wins = big progress 💛

One sound at a time can change everything. Explore more at https://asoundbeginning.org/

“My child understands everything, they just don’t talk yet.”
I hear this all the time 💬

And yes, understanding language is a GREAT sign. But expressive language (talking) is a separate skill.

If your child --
👉 Follows directions
👉 Points or gestures
👉 But they aren’t using many words

They may still need support to express themselves. And that’s okay 💛

"My child can say the sound in therapy… but not at home!”

This is SO common. 👇

Speech sounds develop in stages:
1️⃣ Sound in isolation
2️⃣ Words
3️⃣ Sentences
4️⃣ Conversation

That last step? The hardest.

Practice in REAL life (not just drills) is what makes it stick. 💬

Bridge the gap between therapy and home. Learn more at https://asoundbeginning.org/

If a child is overwhelmed… they can’t communicate effectively.

Before words come:
💛 Feeling safe
💛 Feeling regulated
💛 Feeling understood

If your child is melting down, scripting, or shutting down,

Focus on connection first.

Language comes AFTER regulation.

Help your child feel safe, regulated, and understood. Explore more at https://asoundbeginning.org/
