NSH - National Society for Histotechnology This is the official page for the National Society for Histotechnology. Though much has changed, our mission has stayed true to our core purpose.

The National Society for Histotechnology is a professional organization for individuals actively engaged in the histology field. Since its founding over 40 years ago, NSH's member community has grown to include over 3,000 histology professionals from around the world. Our Mission is shaping the future of Histotechnology through a global community of professionals committed to educating, advocating, and driving patient quality. Our Vision is to empower, partner, and educate for the global advancement of Histotechnology. https://www.nsh.org/home

NSH recently launched its new Enhanced Education membership to get free histology CEU access to over 70 on-demand histotechnology CEU webinars, included with membership. https://www.nsh.org/membership/nsh-membership. Members can apply to win scholarships to advance their histology careers. Learn more here: https://www.nsh.org/learn/scholarships

We saw a lot of GLP-1 ads during the Super Bowl.

As weight-loss therapies gain traction, researchers are paying closer attention to drug-associated muscle loss and the need for reliable ways to quantify changes in muscle fiber size and structure.

In NSH HistoTalks Podcast episode, Rosa Chiro discusses how her team optimized fluorescent Wheat Germ Agglutinin (WGA) staining to support image-based analysis of skeletal muscle—producing cleaner myofiber delineation than traditional H&E and enabling more consistent, programmable morphometric measurement.

Are multiple GMS-stained levels always necessary?

A recent study took a closer look at routine GMS staining practices across 127 esophageal biopsy cases, examining not only diagnostic findings—but also the time and labor involved at the bench.

From sectioning and water bath handling to manual staining workload, the researchers evaluated how much effort goes into additional levels and whether that work consistently adds diagnostic value.

Workplace issues don’t always show up loudly—and that’s what makes them harder to address.

Wednesday's NSH Lab Webinar, Navigating and Avoiding Workplace Discrimination, walks through real-life scenarios labs encounter and how teams can recognize issues early, respond appropriately, and prevent escalation.

Catch up with our friends at StatLab on the Exhibit Hall floor at the 2025 NSH Histotechnology Convention.

Jordan Steinfeld walked us through several systems designed to support real-world histology workflows — from sectioning and embedding solutions to tissue processing equipment built with redundancy and reliability in mind.

These kinds of one-on-one conversations are what make the Exhibit Hall such a valuable part of the NSH experience: a chance to ask questions, see equipment up close, and talk through how solutions fit into day-to-day lab work!

Stay tuned for Exhibitor details for 2026. 👀

Blur continues to be a persistent QC challenge in digital histology, even when scanner focus scores appear acceptable.

This open-access article from the Journal of Histotechnology looks at how a large preclinical lab improved H&E whole slide image quality control by pairing computational blur detection with histotechnologist review.

The approach helps teams spot out-of-focus regions faster, focus manual review where it matters most, and reduce time spent on repetitive QC checks without replacing human judgment.
