According to the Alzheimer's Association, more than 7 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease—and that number is projected to nearly double by 2050.

Ruth Fidler, MS, HTL(ASCP), of Baylor University Medical Center, part of Baylor Scott & White Health, explains why Alzheimer’s disease and dementia aren’t interchangeable terms, what clues histotechs can I.D. in the lab, and how understanding the science behind dementia can improve patient care.

“When we showed up at the nephrologist, he kicks it off with what the next steps are for preparing for end stage kidney disease… Then the final kick to the midsection of that appointment was him talking about getting on the transplant list.”

When your professional world collides with your personal life, even years of medical experience can’t prepare you for the emotions that follow. For Natasha Leon, MLS(ASCP)SBB, a medical technologist at Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin, that moment came when her mother was diagnosed with renal failure—and Natasha found herself not in the lab, but in the patient chair.

"Sometimes we’re focused on the completely wrong problems. You have probably lived through those situations where a weird anomaly happened in the laboratory that caused some sort of error. It was just a confluence of events that actually happened. Then the pathologist said, 'Well, what are you going to do about it?' and the next thing you know, created this whole new process with redundant checks to try to solve this almost one in a million type of problem.” — Histology educator Joshua Greenlee, MBA, IASSC CBB, HT/HTL(ASCP)

Sound familiar?

Woodrow Wilson was famously quoted as saying, “If you want to make enemies, try to change something.” This bit of wisdom is not only true for politics; it’s also true in the lab. But, although we may be initially inclined to resist change, we have to remember that it has been an integral part ...

When’s the right time to refresh your H&E reagents? Every lab has its own rhythm, but how much reuse is too much before quality starts to fade?

Researchers put this question to the test, using digital image analysis to measure subtle shifts in hematoxylin and eosin stain intensity.

“You deserve to go home at the end of your shift without any injuries.”

At the 2025 NSH Histotechnology Convention, keynote speaker Dan Scungio, MLS (ASCP) SLS, CQA (ASQ), CHOP reminded us that safety isn’t optional—and that “not having time” is never an excuse.

Protect your team. Protect your results.
