It is not our job to teach autistic children "the right way to play", nor is it beneficial. Adopting a child-led approach increases rapport. Moments of truly authentic engagement between the child and the adult is the best environment to build language. Children learn best when they feel safe and relaxed. You don't need to teach children how to play, you play with them and teach them the language around the types of play they love.Whether they want to pretend that their cars are babydolls, or they prefer to line their cars up and examine how the wheels spin and the doors open, follow their lead, be enthusiastic about their interests, develop a shared connection and promote language around activities that will be intrinsically motivating for them!

Participation in a neurodivergent child’s preferred play can prompt increased engagement, vocabulary, interactions, and learning.
