💙 In Loving Memory of Jane Probst 💙
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Jane Probst—a founding force, a fearless leader, and a cornerstone of the Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program.
Jane, along with her late husband Bert Probst, and dear friends Dorothy and Russ Taylor, helped found LASP in 1988 in honor of their close friend Bill Lounsbury, following his passing from cancer. Bert, Russ, and Bill shared decades together on the Holiday Valley Ski Patrol, bound by a love of the mountain and a belief that skiing should be for everyone.
Jane became LASP’s first director, serving from 1988 through the early 2000s. During her leadership, she grew the program from just four instructors to more than forty, building a foundation rooted in skill, compassion, and inclusion. Jane and many instructors pursued advanced PSIA certifications, ensuring that hundreds of adaptive athletes could experience the joy, freedom, and confidence that skiing brings.
Even more meaningful—many of those instructors are still part of LASP today, carrying Jane’s legacy forward on the snow.
When Jane retired, she was honored with a plaque titled The Essence of Skiing, featuring this quote by Jack Heggie:
“Skiing is like a dance with the mountain.
You move with ease from side to side, suspended by a magical thread somewhere between heaven and earth.
When you are touched by the spirit of skiing you will know the joy of the mountain and the freedom of the wind.”
Jane—may you now dance with the wind and enjoy your newfound freedom.
Thank you for the gift of skiing you gave to so many, and for shaping the heart of Lounsbury Adaptive in ways that will last forever. 💙🎿
Your legacy lives on—every run, every smile, every first turn.
