From a medical perspective, the holiday season is more than a busy time—it’s an important opportunity to care for both your physical and emotional health. December naturally invites us to connect or reconnect with loved ones, and those supportive relationships are proven to reduce stress, improve mood, and even benefit heart health and immunity.

As you move through this season, try to balance the celebrations with simple healthy habits: stay hydrated, get enough sleep, take medications as prescribed, and step outside for fresh air when you can. Most importantly, check in with yourself and others—sometimes a phone call, a shared meal, or a quiet conversation can be just as healing as any medicine.

It's Wellness Wednesday! 🌿

This week, we're reminding you to take time to slow down during this busy holiday season. Sleep plays a vital role in healing. Studies show that consistent sleep schedules help stabilize mood, reduce stress, and strengthen cognitive control. These are all key elements for sustaining recovery.

Try implementing an evening wind-down routine to calm your mind and body before you go to sleep:

- dim bright lights,
- avoid screens 30 minutes before bed,
- and keep wake-up times steady.

Remember, even seemingly small habits strengthen long-term wellness!

The holidays can be a beautiful time of connection, but they can also be challenging when you’re in recovery. As your counselor, I want you to know it’s okay if this season feels complicated, joyful, and heavy at the same time. Please remember that your recovery comes first: it’s more than acceptable to set boundaries, leave early, say ā€œno,ā€ or choose quiet over chaos. Lean on your support system, use the tools you’ve learned, and reach out if you’re struggling—you don’t have to do this alone. This Christmas, I hope you find moments of peace, self-compassion, and pride in how far you’ve come. šŸŽ„šŸ’š

Happy Wellness Wednesday! 🌱

When emotions feel overwhelming, grounding techniques can reconnect you to the present moment. Evidence-based tools like the "5-4-3-2-1 sensory method" help reduce anxiety and regulate the nervous system.

When you feel overwhelmed, pause and make note of the following:

5 things you can see
4 things you can touch
3 things you can hear
2 things you can smell
1 thing you can taste

A simple reset can make a big difference.

Wellness Wednesday 🌿

Stress affects the brain in many ways. It can even disrupt the circuits involved in regulating cravings. Short, regulated breathing can reduce this response!

How to practice 4-6 breathing technique:

1.) Inhale: Breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds. Focus on filling your lungs comfortably without straining.

2.) Exhale: Breathe out through your mouth for 6 seconds, allowing your breath to flow out slowly and completely. You can visualize blowing out a candle to help control the exhalation.

3.) Repeat: Continue this cycle for several minutes, focusing on your breath and the sensations in your body. Aim for a total of 5 breaths per minute when practicing this technique.

Research shows longer exhales activate the parasympathetic nervous system, helping calm the body and support recovery. Take one minute today for intentional breathing. You deserve that calm.

"Hello! My name is Michelle Lewis. I have been a nurse for 29 years and have worked in many areas of healthcare, including hospitals, doctors' offices, hospice care, clinical research, and now in addiction treatment. I love meeting new people and find great joy in helping others.

I have been married for 25 years and am the proud mom of two sons and a daughter. I also have three wonderful grandchildren and another on the way! In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family and making memories with the grandchildren. Having seen the impact of addiction within my own family, I understand the challenges and strive to be a source of hope and support for others on their journey to recovery."
