Students survived their first written and practical test this week. They were challenged on the foot and ankle.

We ended the week on Achilles Tendon ruptures: how they occur, surgery, rehab, and how to treat them. Thanks to an injury to Aaron Rodgers on Monday Night Football, we had some real life comparison.

Ankle Taping Lab
A couple weeks ago they struggled to simple tear tape, now several students are taping their teammates for practice and games.

Amazing to see the progress so quickly.

Slow Twitch vs. Fast Twitch Muscle Fibers: students have been learning the difference between the two and how to identify which muscle fiber they have. This is important when designing rehab, workouts, and sports performance.

Fast Twitch: (Matt): uses a quick and less shallow squat technique with quicker “launch”

For the past 2-3 weeks before Thanksgiving break we dove into the world of Exercise Physiology and Anatomy of the knee musculature.

Not only are students learning the principles of Exercise Physiology, but also how to apply it for their own training. These students will now be able to apply these techniques to improve their own performance in sports.

In addition, we have done several assignments in which students have to analyze body movements and squat performance in adults 25 years or older. They not only had to recognize problems with squat performance, but also tell their “patient” how to fix it.

In the past 2 weeks students have started learning about the knee: Anatomy, ligament testing, surgery, and some taping skills. Students continue to impress me with their ability to absorb information.

“Teamwork makes the dream work”….working together to get their patient to the next step requires them all to communicate and work together…

To go along with concussion testing, students also learned about spine boards, neck fractures, and on the field management of possible spine fractures.

Big thank you to Brittany Bailey with the Ellinwood EMS for her knowledge and time. She taught and demonstrated how to deal with these types of injuries.

The EMS is an integral part of the Sports Medicine team. These students learn how we work together while covering events in our community.

Assessing the athlete and progressing with concussion rehab is based on vital signs, symptoms, and determining the correct percentage of heart rate that the athlete can perform without symptoms.

Accurate vital signs are crucial when the athlete is at rest and during exercise. Student here are improving their skills at taking heart rate and using that information during concussion protocol.

Concussions, unfortunately are part of sports. For the past 2 weeks these students have learned the science behind brain injuries, assessment of concussions and Cranial nerves, and how and when to safely return a player to sport.

Jump Testing has been a proven way to determine if an athlete is safe to return to sport. Britton is testing his “injured” athlete, Matt. Based on this test, a decision is made whether he can return to competition.

When can an athlete return to competition after an injury?

Any one of these students can now perform research based tests to determine if an athlete is safe to return.

Pictured is students testing each other, configuring the statistics, and coming up with sports specific skills to see if their “injured” athlete can get “back into the game”
