February 3rd is National Missing Persons Day.

Today - and everyday - we remember those who are missing and support their families. Every year, thousands of people go missing in the United States, leaving behind loved ones searching for answers.

Here are a few ways to help spread the word about the missing in your community:

Share missing person alerts.

Support local search efforts.

Volunteer for fundraising events or awareness campaigns sponsored by missing persons organizations.

Encourage family members to provide a DNA reference sample.

Together, we can make a difference and bring hope to families of missing persons. Let's use our voices to keep their stories alive and help bring them home.

Why do so many Americans go unclaimed each year?

“The Unclaimed,” written Pamela Prickett and Stefan Timmermans, examines the unexpected or unintentional twists and turns that put four Los Angeles residents at risk of going unclaimed. The book confronts the truth that anyone can be abandoned and takes a hard look at the many reasons it happens.

Do you wonder how someone can go unclaimed in the U.S.? “The Unclaimed” puts a face to individuals who are at risk of going unclaimed, as well as the scene investigators, notification officers, and crematorium workers who care for them.

Every year almost 600,000 are reported missing in the U.S. and about 4,400 unidentified human remains are recovered (1). In addition, there are approximately 18,000 open unclaimed remains cases in our country right now, according to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs).

This is our nation’s silent mass disaster.

NOKfinders uses forensic genealogy to find the next of kin (NOK) in missing and unclaimed persons cases. We specialize in difficult cases and are available to help various agencies – coroners, medical examiners, law enforcement, and funeral homes - find answers.
