STRENGTH TRAINING IS THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH β
Strength training for longevity focuses on preserving muscle mass, joint function, balance and metabolic health as we all age. Itβs about training smart and sustainably, not just hard.
This style of training helps prevent:
- Sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss)
- Osteoporosis
- Falls and fractures
- Chronic disease (diabetes, heart disease, etc.)
- Loss of independence
Progressive strength training is essential for maintaining the independent ability to complete daily activities, sharpen the neuromuscular system to decrease falls and help avoid injuries that could derail long term progress. This type of training is important for anyone over the age of 35, those who have a more sedentary job or retirees who want to maintain an independent lifestyle.
Fun facts regarding strength training:
- Muscle strength is a better predictor for mortality than BMI.
- Higher grip strength correlates with a longer life and better healthspan
- Regular strength training improves insulin sensitivity, bone density, mental health and brain function.
