A slipped disc (also called a herniated or bulging disc) happens when the soft inner material of a spinal disk pushes through its outer ring, irritating nearby nerves. Despite the name, the disk doesn’t actually “slip” out of place. This condition is a common cause of lower back pain and sciatica (pain radiating into the buttocks and legs).

Affects 5–20 out of every 1,000 adults, most often ages 20–50 and in men>women.

Primarily can be caused by aging and wear-and-tear (discs lose water content, weaken and shrink), trauma or injury or, less commonly, connective tissue or congenital disorders.

Every low back/disc symptom can present with different symptoms and is treated differently by each provider.

👉 Key takeaway: A slipped disc is a common spinal issue caused mostly by aging or injury, leading to nerve irritation and back or leg pain. Most cases improve with conservative care, but surgery may be needed for severe or persistent symptoms.

STRENGTH TRAINING IS THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH ❗

Strength training for longevity focuses on preserving muscle mass, joint function, balance and metabolic health as we all age. It’s about training smart and sustainably, not just hard.

This style of training helps prevent:
- Sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss)
- Osteoporosis
- Falls and fractures
- Chronic disease (diabetes, heart disease, etc.)
- Loss of independence

Progressive strength training is essential for maintaining the independent ability to complete daily activities, sharpen the neuromuscular system to decrease falls and help avoid injuries that could derail long term progress. This type of training is important for anyone over the age of 35, those who have a more sedentary job or retirees who want to maintain an independent lifestyle.

Fun facts regarding strength training:
- Muscle strength is a better predictor for mortality than BMI.
- Higher grip strength correlates with a longer life and better healthspan
- Regular strength training improves insulin sensitivity, bone density, mental health and brain function.

Feel free to contact us here or stop by in person to speak with our trainer about our senior fitness classes.

It is HOT, HOT, HOT outside! Here are some quick and easy ways to beat the heat. 🌞

- Train early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler
- Take more frequent breaks during midday practices or games
- Drink water consistently before, during, and after activity 💧
- Use electrolyte drinks during prolonged or high-intensity training
- Monitor urine color — dark yellow = dehydrated
- Avoid energy drinks or excess caffeine
- Wear moisture wicking, breathable, and light-colored gear 👕
- Use hats or visors and UV-blocking sunglasses outdoors
- Apply sweat-resistant sunscreen before practice
- Use cold towels, ice packs, or cooling vests during breaks
- Take cold showers or ice baths post-workout

Pickleball has been the fastest growing sport in the country! Even though the sport itself is slower paced and lower impact, there are fast position changes, quick changes in direction and repetitive activities that really skyrocket the risk of injury.

These injuries include:
- Achilles' tendon injuries
- calf strains
- Low back pain
- knee injuries
- shoulder injuries

The best way to minimize injury risk is to adopt a great warm up and cool down program, be more aware of body signals in regards to pain under stress of exercise and involve your favorite physical therapist for both preventative and rehabilitative needs! 💪
