You’re punishing them for becoming a reflection of your example? The truth is, children don’t just listen to what you say—they absorb who you are. They’re not only downloading your words, but mirroring your behaviors, your habits, and your emotional responses. They’re not just watching you, they’re becoming you. So before you discipline them for being disrespectful, reactive, emotionally distant, or inconsistent—ask yourself if that’s what you’ve shown them. Sometimes we feel ashamed or not ready to face the behaviors we’ve modeled, but we can’t be mad at our children for living out the patterns they inherited from us. Accountability isn’t about guilt—it’s about choosing to be better now. If you want to raise a different kind of child, you have to show them a different kind of parent. Don’t just demand change from them—be the change they can follow.
