Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is a time to reflect on the importance of fostering true inclusion, promoting equity, and celebrating the many contributions of people with developmental disabilities in all aspects of community life.

Robin is all smiles as she utilizes an accessible bus to travel to and from her day program, where she enjoys spending time with friends and participating in community activities.

Being part of our community means feeling welcomed, valued, and included. It means having the opportunity to participate in everyday activities—building friendships, contributing your talents, accessing services, and enjoying shared spaces and events alongside others.

For people with developmental disabilities, being part of the community means having the same opportunities as anyone else: to work, learn, socialize, travel, and make choices about their own lives. It also means having the supports and accessibility needed to fully participate.

At its heart, community is about connection—people supporting one another, celebrating differences, and ensuring everyone has a place where they belong. 🌟

The month of March is recognized as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM), a time to celebrate the inclusion of people with disabilities and to recognize the importance of empowering individuals to live meaningful lives of their choosing.

In March 1987, President Ronald Reagan issued a public proclamation urging Americans to provide individuals with developmental disabilities “the encouragement and opportunities they need to lead productive lives and to achieve their full potential.”

March also marks the start of our Membership Campaign. Your membership helps fuel advocacy, programs, and essential supports for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities—and their families—across our region. Together, we can continue building a more inclusive community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

📞 CALL FOR ACTION: Help Us Reach 5,000 Calls for Disability Services! New York’s disability services system is at a critical moment, and we need your voice. The Arc New York community is mobilizing supporters across the state to make 5,000 calls to legislators in support of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and the workforce that supports them.

📣 What to do: Call your NYS Senator or Assemblymember and urge them to support people with IDD in the 2026–27 NYS Budget.
📝 Use our Call Scripts: https://tinyurl.com/4xr3mdjr
⏰ When to call: The sooner, the better.
⚠️ Why it matters: The Executive Budget includes only a 1.7% Targeted Inflationary Increase, but providers need the full 2.7%, unrestricted, just to keep pace with inflation and support CareForce affordability initiatives that sustain the workforce.

👥 Who should call: Anyone in New York State. You, your family, your friends; every voice makes an impact.

📍 Find your legislator:
🔹 NYS Assembly: https://nyassembly.gov/mem/search/
🔹 NYS Senate: https://www.nysenate.gov/find-my-senator
Or call Governor Hochul directly: ☎️ 518-474-8390

✅ After you call, tell us so we can track progress toward 5,000 calls 👉 https://forms.office.com/r/M0K91kQ2tr

Together, we can protect progress and ensure New Yorkers with disabilities continue to receive the support they deserve.
