River's Edge Meditation Group

River's Edge Meditation Group Elmira-based meditation and discussion group! Welcoming people of all persuasions to sit with us. Afterward there is discussion, or perhaps a reading.

The River's Edge Meditation Group was founded in 2012 by Margie Rodgers and Seamus Kennedy, and has met weekly on Wednesday evenings since then. We gather at 6:30pm every Wednesday evening, get oriented, and then meditate for 30 minutes together. Beginners can always get basic meditation guidance, and are heartily welcomed. The group has developed into an enthusiasm-generating center of spiritual development, as well as become a mutually supportive refuge for weary minds and hearts. In addition to meditation practice, we regularly hold discussions on book readings, or specific practices that we find interesting and helpful. We schedule beginners workshops throughout the year,

The group has a beautiful Tibetan Buddhist core, often including topics and practices that further us on the path to becoming more compassionate, kind and generous human beings. Integral theory, neurobiology, western faith perspectives, psychology and even storytelling find their way into our discussions! More importantly though, we laugh often, as we support each other on the path of waking up. We will be offering meditation on Tuesdays at 11am in the month of July at Steele Memorial Library. In these sessions, you’ll learn a few simple, effective meditation techniques—no prior experience needed. We’ll explore how to gently bring your attention to the present moment using breath, body awareness, and kind curiosity. After a brief overview, you’ll be guided through a relaxed, accessible meditation so you can experience it for yourself. Introduction to Insight Meditation (Vipassana).
Kell Julliard returns to Elmira to lead us in Awakening Wisdom, level three in the Tergar Joy of Living program.

Overview:
In this course, spread out over a weekend, we will explore the causes of suffering and dissatisfaction through the practice of insight meditation. By bringing our unchallenged beliefs and patterns into the light of awareness, we can see how our rigid ideas often blind us to the richness of our true nature. The wisdom that arises through insight meditation allows us to see our inner experience clearly. This leads to a sense of freedom, well-being, and confidence that is rooted in awareness itself and available to us each and every moment.
In the third level of Joy of Living, Mingyur Rinpoche offers guidance on the practice of insight meditation, a profound form of meditation that uproots the causes of anxiety and suffering.
