There is a brotherhood/sisterhood that exists between first responders that also includes our hospital emergency departments. When the chips are down, everyone pitches in to make life and work more bearable.
So with that in mind. we at LifeCare want to send a shout out to University Amherst Hospital. With Ohio Edison doing some extensive maintenance today, Amherst experience a day long black out. No lights, no heat !! So with the comfort and safety of our Amherst squad in mind the Hospital offered up their overflow ER to house our people for the night. We gratefully accepted their offer. So if needed we will respond with toasty toes and happy hearts.
Thanks University Amherst !!

Well, anyone that knows me knows what I am preparing for - The Lorain County Fair ! It was a very important part of my childhood and a very important part of my EMS career. Imagine if you will that for 7 days your service area doubles and sometimes triples in population. It is challenging to say the least, The usual calls turned into horse kicks, electrical shocks, and a piece of farm equipment that grabbed an arm and wouldn't let go. The usual patients were replaced by kids, carnies and even a singing star. My ability as an EMT to improvise was tested. Safety at the Fair is very important to the Board that is in charge. They have made many changes to their safety and health protocols to make the Fair experience the best and safest ever,
So, looking for some excitement this week ? Head to Wellington and go to the Fair. And stop by the Safety Forces and thank them for their service.

Several years ago my family established a scholarship in my Grandpa and Grandma's name. This money is given yearly to students that participate in 4H or FAA and are pursuing a career in an agricultural related vocation. My daughter and I were asked to be a part of the ceremony at the Lorain County Fairgrounds to distribute this scholarship and several others to students that qualified and earned this money for their education.
It was gratifying to see these young people and their families still making agriculture an important part of their lives. 4H has changed over the past years to include more urban pursuits, small animals, gardening. It is still a wonderful program that needs our support. Money and volunteers are always needed. If you have an interest or kids that would like to look into where our food comes from, how we will feed the world or just how to train Fluffy to sit and stay - think about 4H. Some day, it may help pay for college.

Have you ever thought about becoming an Emergency Medical Technician ? It is a very rewarding and interesting line of work. I know, I know, you're saying " I can' t stand blood, I wouldn't know what to do" but I can assure you that lots of people with successful careers in EMS started with just that attitude.
Forty years ago, EMS changed in Ohio and many cities and small towns were left to fend for themselves for ambulance service and First Responders, I lived that. I took the EMT program for strictly selfish reasons and was finally dragged kicking and screaming into volunteering on the local squad. I found that the secret was that after taking the EMT class, I knew what to do when an emergency presented itself. That knowledge was the secret, I fell in love with the work and stayed for 40 plus years.
If you are even thinking about a career path that is lots of hard work but unbelievably rewarding, call LifeCare EMS Training Academy, talk to Sara or Tina. They will hook you up with the information you need to decide if this is a profession for you to seriously consider.

My granddaughter will begin working at LifeCare soon. I am having such a good time living vicariously through her. Watching her progress through this next adventure in her life is such a pleasure. LifeCare was my home for so long and I still miss it every day so now I will have a view back into that world.
I am a Face book “creeper” as my grandchildren call me. I don’t write much (almost never) but I enjoy reading about the goings on in the lives of people that were my colleagues at LifeCare. Especially the young people who are just starting out; how are they progressing in their careers, how big are their kids now, classes they are taking, new beginnings in their lives. I am always pleased to see them advance toward their goals.
So remember when you are posting that there is a stalker reading along and enjoying every word.

I am always interested in days, weeks, and months that have been designated as such and such day to be celebrated by everyone and declared a significant day by an official body such as the United States Congress. March 14 was designated as Pi day in 2009 by the US House of Representatives. It is the celebration of” the mathematical constant π (pi)”. Now having struggled with math my whole life I reject this celebration of 3, 1 and 4. They are numerical trouble makers! I do however support the high jacking of this day by the bakers and distributors of pie. Some clever marketing person saw the opportunity to play on the word pi turning it into pie. So I joyfully watch as television personalities of all stripes consumed apple, banana cream and peanut butter pie in recognition of the day. And later I ran errands that involved stopping at several places of commerce. At two of these enlighten stores, I was offered samples of various pies seeking to induce me to purchase larger versions to take home and continue the celebration of pi/pie day. I did go home and bake my own pie; not doing so would have been un-American! At dinner I urged my husband to join the celebration by helping me consume said pie. So I have decided to look up other days that I might get behind enthusiastically. Is there a steak day, or pizza day? I am no mathematician but I can figure how to use these made up celebrations to my own advantage.

Saturday I attended the EMT graduation. A good time was had by all and I was reminded of how exciting it is to start your EMS journey. Of course this graduation was special to me because my granddaughter was graduating and was Salutatorian of the class. The class was such a variety of personalities with wildly varied reasons for taking the class. I would love to have had more time to hear everyone’s story.
Kathy, Nick and Zack, the class instructors, were there and should be very proud of the success of this class. It is a tough job approaching the information that must be passed on to the students with enthusiasm and humor while still conveying the literally life or death importance.
Good Luck to the 2017 EMT class and enjoy your journey.

My Granddaughter is just about to graduate from EMT class. I have followed her process of course with great interest. To see her learn the new skills and be so excited about helping those who need her is so gratifying. Some of the basic information has not changed but then other techniques have been deleted or improved. It’s been interesting.
It has also been fascinating to see her make friends in her class. These are people that years from now will have either pursued their interest in EMS or found that it doesn’t suit them and have moved on. Most people even if they don’t stay in EMS will recall their days in this profession as a great experience. We all have stories to tell and people we will always remember. I have tried to impress on her that your reputation in EMS starts now; in this very first class. Always perform your duties in a way you will be proud of. Years from now people will remember.
I have been in love with EMS for over 40 years. I am excited with every graduating class to see my profession carry on and improve.

Today was a sad day for first responders. Another police officer was struck and killed on Rt. 90 on the
West side of Cleveland. This is a part of the job that is truly frightening. Responding to calls on the Ohio Turnpike, Rt. 90 or Rt. 2 especially but really on any roadway is cause for extra caution. You are trying to do your job and treat patient(s), watch cars, etc. Motorists don’t seem to remember the rules of the road. They continue to drive too fast, to stay in the lane closest to the traffic stop or accident – even when they could easily move over. THEY IGNORE EMERGENCY LIGHTS!! And now-a-days, I see people continue to talk or text on their phone. I am not being overly dramatic when I say lives are literally on the line here.
Be careful, be courteous, and be kind. Somewhere there is a police officer, a paramedic, EMT, wrecker operator, a construction worker, a stranded motorist that wants to go home to their family today – just like you.

Well, I thought the look at the he**in epidemic last night on Fox 8 was pretty good. LifeCare was represented by our one and only Mike Bridge. He was handsome and articulate, can’t ask for more. And of course, I get goose bumps every time I see those beautiful red and white trucks. Herb has always insisted on good looking trucks and I am all in with that.
Did I think that the report came up with any concrete answers on how to fix this huge problem? Not really. More money for rehab, alternate pain management was among those mentioned but it just doesn’t seem to completely answer the question about how to attack this terrible scourge.
I think there were three things that really struck me. I feel like I know a fair amount about the problem but I did not know that Ohio is ground zero for this plague. Wow, how did we get that questionable title? Second, we are losing more people to this epidemic than we lost in the Vietnam War. That is a shocking number. And lastly, I had no idea that doctors are under pressure from drug companies to prescribe opiates for pain. They did make a good case for prescription opiates being the slippery slope that starts many on the road to he**in.
I fear for the generation coming up if we don’t find answers. Every one of us, whether by our work, our family or friends, has been touched by this plague or will be. It won’t be an easy puzzle to solve but will be worth the effort to each and every one of us.
