I love how they include a “What can I do to help?” section for each age group, listing great ideas for supporting your children’s language development at home!

This update includes communication milestones—which are the speech, language, and hearing skills that most children will demonstrate by identified ages—as well as milestones for feeding and swallowing.

As a parent, it can be hard to know if your child is reaching their communication milestones on time. There is such a huge range of average communication development, especially amongst the little ones! If your child is not demonstrating the skills listed for their age, I recommend reaching out to a speech-language pathologist to determine if an evaluation is warranted.

I love this quick communication milestone guide for kids! It can be difficult for parents to know when to seek out a speech and language evaluation, and there is a wide range of average communication development at these ages. It is important to reach out to a speech-language pathologist with any concerns regarding your child’s communication skills, so they can help you dig deeper into your child’s individual strengths and weaknesses! 💛

To parents of children with already identified communication delays- feel free to scroll past this post, you’ve already identified your child benefits from support and these numbers are not relevant - your child’s progress is ❤️

To parents considering a speech and language evaluation: It can be really difficult for parents to know when to get a speech and language evaluation - especially when they are constantly bombarded with various information and it’s difficult to know what to believe or what is best for your child.

It also gets tricky because there is a HUGE range of average communication development, and communication skills are way more and way broader than I could include in a “quick” guide. As a result, I always recommend to get an evaluation if you - or anyone else - thinks one is needed. Often that means trusting your gut as a parent, but I think it’s equally important to trust if someone else thinks it’s necessary too.

The truth is: some kids qualify and demonstrate a need for intervention and some don’t- you won’t know unless you see a speech pathologist! AND just because a child does not qualify at one time in their life, does not mean they will not at a later time.

And last: there’s NO SHAME in getting your child needed support. The stigma around getting therapy for kids has GOT TO GO!

📣 MEET THE THERAPIST 📣

Hello! My name is Kristen Bever, Founder and Lead Speech-Language Pathologist at Joyful Noise Speech Therapy. I’m an ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist currently licensed to service in-person children and adults in Ohio. I attended Kent State University where I earned a bachelor’s degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology and a master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology.

Since graduation, I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of pediatric settings including schools, clinics, and tele-therapy. My clinical experience includes working with children of all ages with diverse needs and backgrounds. My passion for family-centered services led me to start Joyful Noise Speech Therapy, where I provide individualized and home-based services. I am also licensed to provide tele-therapy across the state of Ohio.
