During deep sleep, the brain does some cleaning up. A fluid called cerebrospinal fluid carries away built-up plaque and toxins, including those associated with Alzheimer's disease. For those that don’t sleep well, this plaque can build up. Here’s what else happens while we rest.

Sleep doesn’t get enough credit these days. We as a society are busy. We push sleep aside to get work done, play on electronics and binge-watch TV. Sleep should be considered just as important as eating to live.

It was reported in 1900 that the laundry staff at old Lakeside Hospital, the predecessor to University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, washed 18,000 - 20,000 pieces of linen every week, more than any public laundry in the city at that time.

"The enormous wash is the result of the fact that no piece of linen is used but once before being washed," reported The Plain Dealer. "A physician wipes his hands on a towel, having just washed them in an anti-septic solution. The towel is sent to the laundry without again being used for any purpose."

Today, University Hospitals outsources more than 5 million pounds of washing for UH Cleveland Medical Center annually.
