Dr. Joseph Van Keuren

Dr. Joseph Van Keuren I'm Dr. Joe Van Keuren, optometrist in Elyria, OH. I will make sure you see as clearly as possible. Each patient is examined by me, not a technician.

About my practice:

I am a graduate of The Ohio State University College of Optometry, practicing in Elyria for more than 27 years. I am delighted that my highly-skilled and experienced staff and I have had the opportunity to serve the community and provide eye care to generations of families and we look forward to meeting new patients as well. I listen to your concerns and I am committed to making sure you see as clearly and comfortably as possible. Ample time is allotted for each exam and patients are never rushed or made to wait unnecessarily. We carry a huge selection of the most sought-after designer frames and sunglasses that are sure to enhance your personal style. Our children’s frame selection includes Miraflex® safe and flexible frames that are virtually unbreakable –parents and kids love them. A one year warranty comes standard with each complete pair of glasses at no additional cost to you. We have all the latest contacts that meet every lifestyle need such as daily disposables, multifocal and astigmatism-correcting lenses. Because improperly worn contacts can cause painful eye infections that can lead to permanent vision loss, we ensure that the lens is the best choice for you and monitor your vision and eye health at each visit. Discount and on-line lens distributors too frequently substitute contact lens brands and fill prescriptions incorrectly. Unfortunately, this is not apparent to the patient until damage to the eye is already begun. It is critical that you have a caring vision specialist looking out for your best interest every step of the way. Call for your annual appointment today and see the difference!

Yes, school is starting soon, too soon. Some college students are heading back to school next week. We will do our best to accommodate all the students that need exams and glasses/contacts, but the appointments are filling quickly.

Importance of sharing your history.

All of my patients are asked to complete a health history before their exam. Some question why this information is important.
The reason I ask these questions is because the eyes are not just the windows to our soul, but they are the windows to our health. There are many conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases, nutritional deficiencies, genetic disorders, sickle cell disease, liver disease, rosacea, and lifestyle choices that affect our eye health and vision.
I want my patients to have the best vision possible and unfortunately, once vision is lost, it often cannot be recovered. However, with early detection and proper treatment, vision loss can be prevented or minimized. Because there are so many factors that influence your eye health, your personal medical history is of the utmost importance for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Are your eyes travel-ready?
Summer is here and you know what that means – vacation time! Whether you’re heading to the mountains, relaxing on the beach, or driving to see friends or family, it’s important that you and your eyes have what it takes to see the world clearly. Before you step out on your next adventure, we recommend that you check out these great do’s and don’ts.
• Do: Double your pairs and pack your backup glasses
• Don’t: Wait to see an eye doctor before traveling
• Do: Prepare for dry eyes on airplanes
• Don’t: Use water to clean your contacts
• Do: Stock up on prescription eye drops
• Don’t: Ignore changes in your vision, even on vacation
• Do: Enjoy your adventure.
Most importantly if you do experience an eye emergency while traveling, find an eye doctor near you. Some eye conditions can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated appropriately. Don’t wait!
