Family Planning Services of Lorain County

Family Planning Services of Lorain County Do we offer abortion services? While FPS does not offer abortion services, we respect an individual’s right to their own healthcare.

We provide external resources for all pregnancy options, including prenatal care, adoption services and abortion. Family Planning Services of Lorain County (FPS) is a non-profit, reproductive healthcare organization with medical offices in Elyria, Ohio. We have been providing care to Lorain County residents since 1969. We provide confidential, high quality and low-cost reproductive health care to

men and women. You can obtain an exam, birth control including IUDs and implants, emergency contraception, pregnancy testing, STI screening and treatment, health education and more. We also provide Early Intervention and transportation services for HIV+ individuals through the Ryan White Part A program. Our services are very affordable. We accept most medical insurance and have a sliding fee scale for those who do not have insurance. We also have insurance enrollment on-site to help you obtain health insurance. No one is turned away due to inability to pay. Each year we care for thousands of individuals just like you. We have regular clinic hours Monday through Friday, and one Saturday per month. Walk-in appointments are now welcome, and telehealth is available for many services.

Just as our clinic doors first opened in 1969 through the determination and support of this community, the mobile health van is the next chapter of that same grassroots spirit. Built by neighbors, for neighbors, it brings care directly to those who need it most.

She sat at her kitchen table staring at her phone.

Worry kept creeping in. She knew she should get tested. There were places she could go, but privacy mattered. The thought of running into someone she knew or having to explain where she was going made her hesitate. This was something she wanted to handle quietly, with a provider she could trust.

A couple years ago, there were more options nearby. When the Planned Parenthood in Lorain closed, it left fewer places for people in our community to turn to for confidential s*xual health services.

She eventually found our clinic, Family Planning Services, and felt relieved knowing compassionate, confidential care was available. But there was another problem: she didn’t have a car, and getting across the county wasn’t easy. So instead, she waited — with questions, uncertainty, and no clear way to get the care she needed.

No one should have to delay healthcare because they can’t get there. Yet transportation remains one of the biggest barriers to care in our community.

Our mobile clinic will help change that by bringing regular opportunities for testing, education, and care directly to neighborhoods so people can access services privately and without barriers.

Your donation helps ensure someone in that moment doesn’t have to wait and wonder.

Our 2024 partnership with Oberlin Community Services showed us both what’s possible—and what’s still standing in the way.

Together, we brought free screenings directly to the Cooper Community Resource Center, meeting people where they are in rural Lorain County and connecting with individuals who might not otherwise access care. But one challenge kept coming up: follow-up.

Patients who needed additional care told us the same thing again and again—they couldn’t get to Elyria. Without reliable transportation, the next step in their care was out of reach.

As Margie Flood, Executive Director of Oberlin Community Services, shared:

“Clients who seek food and emergency assistance from OCS often share they are struggling to keep older, lower-cost vehicles running… Many that need follow-up appointments simply could not get to Elyria because they do not have transportation.”

This is exactly why the mobile health van matters.

With the continued support of Oberlin Community Services, we’re working toward a solution that doesn’t stop at screenings and ensures people can access the full continuum of care, right in their own communities.

Because access shouldn’t end after the first visit.

Edith Lynch arrived by ambulance on last night’s episode of *The Pitt*, complaining of right-sided chest pain that barely responded to nitroglycerin. Her first EKG was read as clean.

It wasn’t. The leads were placed incorrectly.

Dr. Robby caught it immediately, pointing out that the anterior leads had been set too low because, as the medic admitted, she had large breasts and he didn’t want to reposition them. Eight minutes later, she went into VTach arrest. They shocked her back. She survived. A corrected EKG revealed a massive lateral STEMI that the first test had completely missed.

Dr. Robby didn’t let it slide. He called it out in front of everyone, then turned to the room and asked the female staff: death with modesty, or life with brief nudity? Every single hand went up for life.

Here’s the uncomfortable part—the science backs this up.

Research published in *Cardiology and Cardiovascular Medicine* shows that paramedics often misplace EKG leads on female patients due to hesitation or discomfort around breast tissue. Clinical guidance from GE HealthCare also confirms that electrode misplacement affects over 50% of EKGs, with women at higher risk because providers are not consistently trained to handle anatomical differences properly.

This isn’t rare. It’s systemic.

Women are already more likely to have cardiac symptoms dismissed as anxiety, stress, or just “heartburn.” Edith Lynch came in saying she had severe heartburn. She was having a heart attack.

And the one who caught it—Nurse Dana—isn’t just another character. She’s been positioned as the moral anchor of the show, the same person who last week had to physically restrain a violent patient to protect her team.

It’s a strange reality when a fictional drama feels more protective of women’s lives than parts of the real system.

If you’re a woman and you’ve ever had an EKG in an ambulance or ER, you are absolutely allowed to ask if the leads were placed correctly. You’re allowed to ask them to redo it. That’s not being difficult—that’s staying alive.

For more than five decades, we’ve continued to grow alongside the needs of our community.

What began as a small clinic primarily providing pregnancy testing for women has evolved into something much bigger. Today, we proudly serve all people with a wide range of s*xual and reproductive health services.

Along the way, we’ve continued finding new ways to remove barriers to care by:
✨Expanding and remodeling our clinic to better serve patients
✨Installing a Harm Reduction Vending Machine that provides after-hours access to supplies in partnership with Lorain County Public Health
✨And now, purchasing a mobile clinic van so we can bring care directly into the community

Each step forward has been rooted in the same values: making healthcare more accessible, more compassionate, and more responsive to the people we serve.

Now we need your help to take the next step. We’ve purchased the van, and it is on its way, but we still need support to retrofit and build out the interior so it can safely and effectively serve patients.
