Ashtanga with Erica

Ashtanga with Erica Ashtanga yoga is a sequence of poses, similar to learning a dance and repeating it until you synchronize your breath and movement.

Your guide to creating an Ashtanga practice that adapts with you as you age, explore and breathe your way through this incredible life! We hold small classes in Macungie at Sweetwood, both indoors and outdoors, weather permitting. We also offer online classes, either group or private. We welcome all levels of practitioner and believe that this practice can be both therapeutic both physically and mentally through the body/breath awareness focused on in Ashtanga Yoga.

Can I just say....I love life!
And of course teaching Ashtanga Yoga:))))

So many changes over the past few years, but I'm finally back to a full schedule of classes. There are quite a few private sessions sprinkled in there through out the week as well!

And....
I'm back with my girl Britt to teach a workshop in August.
I'm teaching at Chris's studio The Roost and we are hosting our 2nd retreat together in Mexico February 2026.
Jennifer and I have a retreat scheduled in Costa Rica November 2026.
I'm also working out a Midlife Reset: Menopause and Yoga Retreat for April 2026 with author and therapist Shonda Moralis and Dr. Kristin Friel, MD. Interested?

The basis for the Ashtanga practice is the vinyasa, aka Surya Namaskara, aka Sun Salutation A.
As we greet the new day each morning and begin to breathe in deeply, we awaken the mind, muscles and spine with the pumping, forward/backward actions of the Sun Salutation.
Jennifer and I are doing the same movements yet we definitely don't do it exactly the same. And to me, that's how it reveals the beauty of each and every student. We can all practice together, yet look, feel and experience it differently.
Proportions. Injuries. Flexiblity. Weakness. Bone shape. Tightness. Strength. Overuse. Arthritis. Intention. Lack of Attention. Consistency. Time.
These are all things that will affect how you approach this practice.
Next year in Costa Rica, our daily practices together will help you re-connect to your practice and connect the dots of Ashtanga Yoga so you can experience the innate wisdom of this incredible practice.

In 2 days, I teach my first class at my good friend ' new yoga studio in Bethlehem, PA: .
I'm excited to support by yoga brother in this new adventure!
And I'm grateful to him for being such a cool dude and giving me the opportunity to teach at a proper, bad ass studio once again. Lord knows it's been too long.

I look forward to sharing this practice with the next generation of Ashtanga practitioners in the Valley and I can't wait to see my old Ashtanga peeps crawl out of the woodwork after a long, cold Ashtanga nap...

I hope you stop on by to share some laughs, get and give hugs and to make some new memories that we can look back on fondly years from now.
Oh, and there will be some yoga going on there too.
Hope to see you there!

Why is the food so energizing at Vida Asana, our next retreat destination?
Their culinary delights offer garden-to-table cuisine! Every menu item is made from scratch using whole, and as often as possible, organic ingredients. It's creative, it's delicious, it's healthy. What more could you desire?!

'I will give it five stars for the food alone!!! Seriously, I went back home upset that no produce will match the level of freshness and healthiness of the food at Vida Asana.' - Elizabeth T

Someone asked if I teach Primary Series on Saturdays. Here's how I described my classes. If you've taken class with me, do you agree?

I teach to those who come to class: if there are people who need to go slower, we take it easy that day.
I teach for the weather: if it's 90 degrees, we do less vinyasas.
I teach variations: sometimes to truly understand how to do a pose you need to break it down to its foundation.
Life is full of changes, so we vary the practice to keep it interesting but also to work the body differently so we don't over use any particular area.
I like to say i teach 'Ashtanga-ish' alot of the time. Because in my experience, most people will never get into most of the Primary series poses completely (think Marychiasana D and Supta Kurmasana).
But I don't want that to hold people back, I want to empower them to apply the tools of Ashtanga to any situation in life: breathe, pay attention, stay centered.
I often teach things that inform students how to engage the same muscles, get a similar stretch and feel confident enough to find and follow the feel-good!

If it's not fun, why do it?

Have you ever noticed that different Ashtanga teachers have slight differences in how they teach a pose?
It can be confusing for new Ashtanga students when they begin to attend different teachers classes or workshops. I have had many students return from a workshop and ask me: Which way is the correct way?!

My question for them is: Have you tried both ways? Do they feel different to you?

We all have different proportions, flexibility, strength and previous injuries that will determine which variation is best for us at this particular point in time. While some instructors just want to maintain control and tell their students that their way is the best.
See how it feels for YOU. If it doesn't matter, like in Paschimottonasana C, switch it back and forth when you practice so you balance both sides.
As we often say, You won't reach enlightenment if you grab your right instead of your left, it's about what's going on inside your body and mind.
Are you doing a workout that uses yoga-like postures?
Or are you practicing with the intention to calm your monkey mind and heal your soul?

Wonder why we want you to join us in Costa Rica at Vida Asana Yoga School Nov 2026 for our Turning Inward: Exploring the Wisdom of Ashtanga Retreat?

CHECK OUT THIS REVIEW FOR VIDA ASANA:
Right time, right place....completely burnt out from work, I booked this retreat in desperate need of a reset from life, and I'm glad to say that this was exactly what I needed. I was looking to find solace in the middle of the Costa Rican jungle through daily yoga and self-care and completely lucked out. I also enjoyed numerous excursions, a massage, an insightful Reiki session and loved the food the staff prepared daily. It was delicious, and I felt taken care of during my excursions with my baggie of homemade trail mix. Sean, Pablo, Santiago, Laurene, and the rest of the Vida Asana team were both accommodating and flexible with my schedule, and it was greatly appreciated! I had a great experience meeting the people there and partaking in the community created by this special place
